The above paragraph says what your problem is. You are exercising too much / not eating enough - if 1600 cals is gross calories before exercise.

Unless you are training for a particular reason, there is no need to train vigorously every day, you are not going to give your body a chance to repair and recover, you will increase your cortisol levels and it will start to stress. Once this happens you will retain water and fat and not loose weight.

It's a fine balance and a common-place action when people get 'the bit between their teeth', start 'dieting' and up the exercise, and then start to plateau weight-wise. Give yourself a minimum of one rest day a week, and just be 'active' a couple of times a week. Go for a walk, do some gardening, etc, you will feel better for it.

I know you're right. I just didn't realise it myself. I knew you needed to rest but my rest days have been including going for a walk, so I'm still exercising, though not as vigorously. I just thought the more I exercised the better my loss would be, I never even thought about giving myself time to recover. Also, I was getting a bit addicted to the gym, I really enjoyed it but as I've said I'm only going to go 3 times a week now so I can get my strength training done there.

We'll see what the scales say next weekend anyway!

    Thanks everyone :)

On another note I've fasted today too as usual. Decided to have breakfast lunch and dinner today. Had porridge and a plum for brekkie, I made that Highland Stew for lunch (which was delicious by the way and really filled me up!) and then had my favourite of omelette and some salad leaves for dinner.

I've really been getting in to drinking green tea everyday also, and today I bought some of M&S' Green Tea infused with Lemon. I can't abide straight up green tea so the lemon adds a lovely taste.
  • I've kept a daily record of my weight first thing each morning since the start of week 3 of my diet. My scales weigh to the 1/4 pound & the weight loss after a diet day has ranged from 2.75lbs to 0.75lbs. Sometimes almost all the loss goes back before the next diet day, but only one diet day has ever started at a higher weight than the previous one.

I don't think there's a lot of rhyme or reason to the different levels of losses, though I guess lying in bed all day and pretending there aren't any calories in cough medicine may mean today turns out one of the less impressive losses!

I think I've gone over the edge! Yesterday for a moment I was actually happy that I'd got food poisoning as it meant I was ill and didn't eat anything.

I had a word with myself and I am now sane again. ;)

Good afternoon all. Just discovered this thread yesterday and rather than pile straight in I thought I would read all the posts, but it's a bit longer than I thought it would be.

I have been doing the 5:2 Diet since last August and have been posting my experiences on another site. I have thoroughly enjoyed this although I have to say that this site has a lot more interest. :)

I hope to post when I've read what folks have got to say.
Well I read the first 400 posts but now I've given up - No willpower :o

I had a fast day today and recently I have just had a meal in the evening. We had the remains of the duck we had yesterday casseroled with kidneys, root veg, onions, leeks, mushrooms, jerusalem artichoke, thyme and some lovely chicken stock. I must say I do enjoy my food on a fast day. :)

I don't tend to measure calories these days as it's very difficult with this sort of thing anyway. Not sure whether the one meal approach is any easier or not but I loving the fasting approach.

Just getting over an awful two weeks of killer flu. It completely removed my appetite so I'm down to 72.8kgs (hurrah) but it felt like it was going to remove my life too so I'm very glad to have retained that! I am finding eating is hard work so fruit and veg are favourite with a little light fish - if it is fish, having watched Bang Goes the Theory last night!!! Had a fast day yesterday whilst playing with grandsons x 4 and coughing massively but forgot to calorie count, I think it came in under the limit anyway. Onwards :0)

  • Hello,
I came across this topic a few weeks and after reading quite a few of the posts, I thought it was a good approach and decided that I would like to join your group (if that's ok ) and give this way of eating a go. I started my first fast/ reduced calorie, day yesterday. I also spent most of yesterday reading all of the posts in this thread which helped me to stay below the 500 calorie target. Hopefully, I will continue to be inspired by all the success stories.
  • As a matter of interest, NOT a recommendation for action(!), I'll report that yesterday's diet day involved lounging in bed while trying to avoid coughing my lungs up - and included 499 food calories + uncounted & countless cough meds / pastilles / pills. Yet resulted in the best post-diet day weightloss I've seen in the last 3 weeks!

Just goes to show you never can tell!

Good luck to all today's dieters.
  • 1940s Gal - I must try that highland strew - do you weigh the ingredients or just guess? I dont have any scales as I usually guess amounts when cooking. Well done on the progress - I am aiming for 1/2 to 1lb a week loss.

Fast day today - they are getting easier. I enjoy reading what other people eat on their's - today I've had a salad with rocket, cucumber, lettuce leaves, a bit of low fat feta and low-fat dressing; plus an apple. Later I will have tuna and low-low fat mayo on one slice of toast with more salad leaves, plus a low-cal hot choc.

Feels ages since my last fast day - it was only last Thurs. I track what I eat each day anyway as on non-fast days I'm not very good at knowing whether I have eaten about right or over-endulged - its only when I type it in I see where I am going.

Welcome! I've not been doing it long but I am finding fasts are getting easier. I also find it motivating reading entries on here esp on fast days - slowly working my way through the thread!
