Question for everyone regarding exercise on fast days; Do you still just eat 500/600cals or do you allow yourself a little more if you've exercised that day? I haven't been doing so but was wondering if others were/weren't.
Michael Mosley was asked this question on Twitter and he said you still ate only 500/600 cals whether you exercised or not.The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -
Wow, page back to normal size. Now, I find that just too weird! I love my computer but no one will convince me that it doesn't behave like a naughty child some of the time. You ignore it so it 'plays up' to get attention.
Had a lot to eat yesterday and will be having fish and chips tonight but weight still same 10st 12lb. This really is magical. Fast day on Monday, actually looking forward to it.
good luck everyone.0 -

Yeah that's what I've been doing. I'll have to sit and watch the programme, I never saw it first time round and I know it's online somewhere.
Anyway, great news this morning! I got on the scales to find myself at 11stone 9lbs which means 1 stone lost in 5 weeks doing this! :j:j:j
I'm going to go reward myself with lots of yummy orange and pineapple
Have a fab weekend everyone!0 -

Radio 4's The Food Programme today was about fasting, for religious and health reasons. I don't fast but having heard what the research said I'm tempted!
Link here to listen again, or catch it at 3.30 tomorrow afternoon. They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.0 -
I haven't read the book, but is it OK to eat absolutely nothing on fast days if you want to, as I find that easier than eating a little? Or maybe just drinking the odd fruit juice, bovril or something.
Also is there an optimum number of days to fast consecutively , and a number where it becomes unhealthy - say 5? Could you do for example 3 on 4 off, or 2 on 2 off?
I think the author said it would be better to fast for 2 days at a time with no food but thought most people would find that too tough so went with one and limited food (could have that wrong though). Also that he tried 4 days consecutive fasting (although again don't know if that meant no food or limited food).
I've never dieted in my life before and have no food issues, just curious and trying to figure out a way that would be easiest for me. And get optimum results.0 -

I haven't spoken to anyone who has fasted completely, i.e no food at all, but I don't see why you couldn't/shouldn't. The idea is you don't go above 500cals if you're a woman or 600 if you're male. It's a limit more than a target I assume. I don't claim to be an expert on this by any stretch though.
Some people do 5:2, others do 4:3. I've read about people doing alternate day fasting too. I think it's entirely a personal choice. If you want to do alternate days, go for it.0 -
I missed the documentary but have read the book. If you're just after losing some weight then stick to your 500/600 calories and consume them when you like. If you would like the full health benefits then leave at least twelve hours between your meals ideally not consuming anything for the full 24 hours. The way I read it if your body is not digesting food after a certain period it starts to repair its cells and this may help with heart disease, diabetes and cancers? Although the research is only at an early stage.
I will eat my tea at 6pm on a Sunday and only drink water and coffee until 6pm Monday, I then have my 600 calories and have my breakfast at 9am Tuesday morning.
I occasionally do the full day fast but it is hard work and I don't think I could manage it all the time. I now class this as part of my lifestyle and will continue to do it 6-1 when I achieve my target weight.0
