thanks for the comments so far- I'll certainly try a few different herbs, but the chicken carcass would not do on a fast day- which is what I wanted it for. I have made a chiken soup that way- but ended up adding loads of salt- which is what I am trying to avoid. It's useful to know about shop bought soup, but Yesterday i wanted a nice chunky veg soup for as few calories as possible. i sort of like making soup too. It came out at 100 cals for 2 large portions when I weighed and worked out the cals. (ie 50 cals a portion) Has anyone tried cardoman spice or corriander.?- or others. I'm not too keen on thyme . Thanks again for all the suggestions-jo0

If you have a big Tesco near you, look in the Jewish ethnic bit for osem and Telma chicken soup base or stock powder, calorie counted and not too salty. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

It's difficult to work out the calorie content of stock as it depends if you skim the fat off and what you put in it. But after a bit of searching, approx 30 cals per 'cup'.
In a big pot of soup - say 4-6 portions - thats only 5-8 calories, not worth worrying about to get the extra flavour and taste. It will also be richer tasting which will keep you fuller for longer0 -
Fast day today and I'm freezing, wrapped up in my slanket! I feel like putting gloves on!
No breakfast or lunch today yet, just 2 cups of tea. Haven't decided what to have for dinner yet, I sort of want to eat but I'm quite used to the hunger now so I'm not ravenous like I would normally be if I'd skipped lunch... does that make any sense to anyone else? lol!
Scales showed no change today after a week, we did have a weekend of excess (lots of booze in particular) as we had a big party for Mum's 60th followed by big family breakfast (cooked). I'm not too unhappy about it but will eat more 'normally' on my feed days and hope that I'll see a difference next week...0 -

Try different ones and see what you like.
I have a passion for beetroot soup at the moment!
I use a mushroom flavoured stock cube from the polish deli if I don't have stock available, 3/4 largish raw beetroots, a couple of courgettes, a generous slice of butternut squash and a chilli. It makes a lot of thick filling soup, and the salt content per serving is not huge. I blitz the whole thing; OH and kids have it with dry-fried sausage or bacon and a bit of cream, I sometimes add some philly in mine. It's delish!I lost my job as a cricket commentator for saying “I don’t want to bore you with the details”.Milton Jones0 -
I've noticed I have started to get itchy skin since I started the 5-2 diet. I put it down to too many tomatoes but I've reduced them and still get it. I am eating a lot more vegetables.. Also on the morning after a fast day, on waking up, I am very thirsty- not at all usual for me. I tend to drink loads of weak tea, especially fast days because I find it helps reduce hunger and spend a penny about twice a night.. I wondered if it was because the fasting causes a lot of balancing of fluids and the body possibly uses more when repairing the system as its supposed to while fasting. Anyone else found this sort of thing?- jo0

It's quite normal. Because you are eating less on a fast day you are not absorbing as much water from solid foods so you feel thirsty.
It's surprising how much water is in ordinary food. One reason why it is possible to remain perfectly healthy without guzzling down the oft recommended eight glasses of water a day.
For example...
The average percentage of water in bread is 37 per cent; in cooked meat, 54 per cent; in vegetables, 70 per cent or more (Letheby).0 -
Well, on Sunday I had a cooked breakfast and then nothing till (very) late, then just some cheese, crackers etc... as it was a bit of a manic day.
On Monday however i felt really, really hungry all day(as did OH, it was his 3rd fast day and my 11th) - so i think somehow related to the poor choice of tea on Sunday, as I have never felt soooo hungry on any of the fast days so far???
Today (feed day, i have been a nightmare and craved sweet things, chocolate etc... which is so unusual for me) Not feeling this has been a great week so far for fasting and conscious that we are away for easter late next week, staying with people so not really able to be in control of meals etc... But will try to keep positive. I dont think this cold is helping either0 -
I ate 2 squares of 90% chocolate and it was more than enough. Felt the need to eat 3 crackers with a little cheese after. Much better. Odd innit! :0):hello:0

I'm maintaining!
I had my first fast day on Monday and that should be me done ..... but I'm still struggling with the science behind maintaining, surely if I eat more than the recommeded cals I will put weight on. I should point out I'm not cal counting anymore so I could be over, I might not iyswim. So today is a mini fast day, I have set myself a target of 700/800 cals instead of the normal 500 and will do this for a week or so, if I am still losing weight I will stop and just eat normally.0
