I was quite annoyed last night because the Daily Mail were advertising this diet on TV as if it was their diet that they had come up with.

My weight loss has slowed down to a few ounces a week. I don't mind as its still going down. On normal days I eat quite big dinners and chocolate, biscuits etc. Overall since August I am down from 9st.11llb to this morning 8st.11.2. I could do with losing a few more pounds but I will get there eventually.

This diet really does work and is easily sustainable. Yesterday I fasted all day then had gammon, mashed potato and piccalilli for dinner. I usually have something healthy but as long as its under 500 calories!

My wife is a similar weight to you and she also finds that the weight comes off very, very slowly. Little more than a pound a month. Even then, that is only by latterly cutting fast day consumption to considerably less than 500 cals and switching to 4:3.

I'm a lot bigger and heavier so the rate of weight loss is much greater. Which is a relief as I have lot more to lose.

I have to agree -I don't really feel I am on a diet. I love the freedom I have on non-fasting days and I don't want to count calories then or feel I have to restrict myself to a certain regime. On fast days I might get a bit hungry but I can't say I have any urge particularly to cheat because I know the next day, it will all be over again for a couple of days.

Today is a non fast day for me and I'm almost wishing Monday around again, so that I can hopefully keep on the downward track. Normally DH and me would have a not particularly healthy tea on a Saturday, but already I am noticing our tastes changing. We are actually fancying more fish -which is what we had tonight. We skipped stocking up on the crisps and sweeties for the weekend because we fancied having some nice fruit instead. So we popped down to the market and had some super bargain buys on Bra*burn apples, banana, grapes and satsumas.

Have also popped into the healthfood shop and stocked up on Mar*gold Bouillon, sunflower seeds, unsalted cashews (mostly for non fast days). I am also going to experiment with miso paste, fish sauce, wasabi and Soba* Noodles. I haven't used these ingredients before, but my DDiL often detoxes and makes a soup with some of these things.

I have had a go*gle and The Go*d Fo*d Website lets you start an online binder of recipes which you can collect on the site. I was having a look through some of the recipes and you can narrow your searches down to recipes that are less than 200 calories per serving -very handy for 5:2 fast days when you're stuck for ideas. You can also add your own recipes if you like.

I have to agree about not taking the 5:2 too far as well, I think I could easily slip into a 3:4, but then I am sure after a while I would simply find it too much and give up on the whole thing -but that's just me.

Welcome to all newcomers:) (I'm quite new myself:D)

Yes, I realised it was different after reading the article by the woman who had breast cancer. For a start she was talking about consecutive days which is a no no with the 5:2.

I think you are right - the beauty of this diet, if you are doing correctly is that 5 days a week you do not have to even think about what you are eating. Then the fast days are equally easy because you are not watching everything you eat but sticking to a certain amount of calories which is simple to do 2 days a week.

I think one of the reasons this diet works is that you are drastically decreasing your overall calorie intake over say a month but by eating normally most of the time you are also keeping your metabolism high. There is no diet plane in this diet.

Is that Jenni Murray? She likes to have a fave diet going on - the other year it was the Dukan diet. I am now completely confused are there 2 different diets going on?

I get awful headaches if I go too long without food so fasting is no good for me.

In my opinion I think you do need your non fasting days to keep up your metabolism which is part of the losing weight easily.

Yes my weight loss has been very slow but steady. Some weeks I have stayed the same. Sometimes I give it a boost on fasting days with only around 300 calories and then I can lose a pound only to lose nothing the following week.

  • Well a bit of a stomach bug today means my food is leaving just as quick as it's arriving so bit of an unscheduled fasting day today and probably tomorrow too!

She's talking about a different diet, similar 'fast' regime but alteration in eating foods on non diet days (using meditteranean {sp??} eating habits).

Are you sure your headaches are caused by going too long without food, or might the problem be not enough fluid? Could you look at a better 'spread' of the limited 500cal throughout the day as opposed to 'skipping' meals altogether?

FAT, there - I've said it. Chubby, bit overweight, pear shaped, disguised with tasteful dressing.......no, no no. FAT. Plain & simple.

Back fat, arm fat, backside fat, thigh fat, belly fat, hip fat, cellulite. I've allowed this to happen by overeating/drinking whatever & whenever I liked, & no exercise.

It's crept on over the years (I'm 58) and I've hidden from it with all the 'nicer' words to describe myself. Makes no difference what my current weight or size is, or what it was, I have SIMPLY GOT TOO FAT & I have not liked it for ages.

Failed at most diets (except Atkins but that isn't healthy, couldn't be sustained indefinitely and piled it all back on plus more pronto anyway).

This diet has made me feel miles better about myself. It hasn't changed my choices particularly but I have most definitely realised that the enjoyment I get from cake, biscuits, chocolate etc etc is the same enjoyment I've got from noticing clothes fit better, a smaller size fits, the numbers on the scales are getting smaller.

THAT feeling is lasting, the junk food feeling only lasts as long as the rubbish is in my mouth, once it hits my stomach it's a massive 'downer'.

I like my 'fast' days. I don't fall off the wagon once the 500cals is in my stomach because I KNOW the bowl of ice cream (or whatever) will undo my whole day's effort and the 'high' from it will not last.

I bought a pair of jeans the other day from M&S, no, can't make it into skinny jeans & maybe never will. They fit great (I'm not saying the size but it's not massively small), I feel good in them (though wouldn't receive any wolf whistles :)) & I like this feeling better than a packet of biscuits.

Anyone who's slipping, please try again & harder. This is a great 'diet'. I think before I eat on food days but don't over-deprive (nor do I pig out). You can do this, I can do this, I'm determined like never before. I'm not looking to be as skinny as the old days, but I'm tired of having felt FAT.

    Good luck everyone. :T:T:T
