You can also work out Weight Watches by yourself.. it's not what Weight watchers and the diet industry is about. It's more about the the motivation, the meetings, the support, knowing that you have a target to reach and someone is checking... lots of people (me in the past) need this, and this is why Weight Watchers and other systems are sucessful.
  • As I've said before each to there own, whatever works for you. I'm sure WW, Slimming World, etc have help many people over the years. For all the reasons you said.

There's no denying that industry's main aim is make money, and again theres nothimg wrong with that.

However as most of us on these boards like to watch our pennies it's nice to have a system that is completely free and actually saves you money.
  • I've just had 2 ryvita and a scraping of Philly and a banana. I will have some of my veggie stew later.
It really helps me to fast knowing I can eat tomorrow:j I really like this "diet"/eating plan.

Absolutely - I lost five stone on my own a couple of years ago, through what I now know was a version of intermittent fasting - skipping breakfast and eating as little as possible during the day, sometimes having a lighter evening meal, sometimes fish and chips or a curry, but in general leaving longer between eating, and feeling hingry a little more than previously.

I realise when I was fat, that I felt like being hungry was a bad thing, and often ate more than I needed to at meals and snacked at the slightest sensation of being hungry.

Now I know that being hungry is ok, and I don't actually often get that light headed feeling I used to associate with being hungry...

This style of eating suite me - eating with friends is a pleasure to me, eating when alone or at work is merely a matter of functioning, most of the time. With this 'diet' I can fast on the days when I'm at work and have an evening in, and eat well on days I am socialising!!

    Actually, I was.
I quit one day... (after a positive pregnancy test) and never touched a cigarette again. It wasn't easy, but I binned all the cigarettes I had left and never bought another pack to make sure I couldn't reach for one at a low point.

I also quit when I was pregnant, but started again:o

So, I ended up smoking for nigh on 36 years and eventually decided enough was enough and I just had to prove to myself and my family that I could give up. My OH gave up 20 years before me and I kept saying that I would be doing the same very shortly.....

Still I made it in the end, but it really did feel like losing an old friend, it was so much a part of my life:(

I really had the most terrible stomach cramps and gnawing feeling inside for the first few months and of course eating became a substitute:o
Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time

One of the many things i love about this way is the eating is that you that you can safely ignore "diet industry" ,work it out for yourself and eat whatever you want 5 days a week

I'm sure they'll try and get there claws into it , no doubt weightwatchers are already working on a "Fast Day" range.

I also love the fact that it is so easy to come up with low calorie meals for just a couple of days - we always have homemade soup on one of the days!

I can't understand why people feel the need to buy special recipe books, but undoubtedly there will be a market for them.

    I agree.
I suspect in summer salads will replace the soups.
But I don't mind having a mad orgy of vegetables on fast days, with a ryvita or two and a piece of fruit. There are still 5 days to have fun cooking in the kitchen!

Just to add that not all low fat food are loaded with sugar.
I drink skimmed milk and eat low fat yogurt ( as opposed to fat free) and there is nothing added. Same with lower fat meat... It's just leaner cuts to start with. I cook plenty of low fat versions of food without adding crap ( made a Greek fava last weekend but ommitted the half cup of oil, and it was delicious)

    Hello everyone,

I found out about the 5:2 diet in the Sunday paper a couple of weeks ago and thought I would give it a try (as an MSE lover thought I'd see if there was a forum and 4 days later have trawled through 67 pages!!!) As a yo-yo dieter for the past 20 years I have learned to recognise my own issues with food but failed to solve them. Basically I love to eat, love sweet food, love the feeling of being full etc whilst simultaneously having great control in short bursts, my personal record being when I came 4 pounds within my goal on slimming world almost 15 years ago (losing nigh on 7 stone I think!). However, when my resolve broke (a 3 month trip to Canada) it broke good and proper and slowly I gained plus some. 2 children later I now carry weight around my middle in a way I never did when I was younger and want something that fits in with family life. I need to be able to treat myself without feeling like I've fallen off the wagon and this seems a sort of happy medium with more positive side effects than simply dieting alone. I'm still with slimming world (lost 21 pounds before Christmas, ten back on after a month off....and by that I mean truly off) and as of last week at a nurses appointment I was back to 17 off). Started 5:2 this Monday and have had 2 500 calorie fast days which have been fine. Other days sticking to 1470 which is what my fitness pal says I need to consume to lose 2 pounds a week. Am realistic that there may be the occasional day maybe like once a week where I don't count at all but allow myself a meal out with OH or friends. Weigh in yesterday was 2 pounds off since nurses check last Thursday so a happy healthy amount for me. Am trying to do exercise of some sort (swimming, walking...I'll build up to bigger things) on each of my non fast days so that fast days are a bit of a treat for me in that I can not exercise!!!! You'll see I'm not the biggest workout fan. Anyway I'll stop by occasionally to catch up and record progress as find this sort of thing motivating. Great to read so many success stories. X

  • I've been following the 5 : 2 way of eating for a month now and am finding it really works for me. I did WW l8 months ago and lost 3 stone and then just couldn't keep it off. I find that I'm an all or nothing kind of person. I can stick to a diet religiously or I can really overindulge - consequently I can never do anything in moderation! This diet is ideal because for 2 days I have to be rigid and the other times I can eat what I want. I don't work out calories on my non-fasting days but have found that I'm not as hungry as before - because I know I can eat what I want I don't binge either! In a month I have lost 12 lb and have gotten used to fluctuations over the week. As long as I am on a downward trend I am happy and 5:2 is so easy that I am quite happy for it to take as long as it takes to lose the weight.

Having said this I had a really overindulgent day yesterday (following a fast day) and still had lost a pound this morning. Don't understand how but very happy anyway!:p
