Can I ask is it better to leave say 24 hours in between eating or do the same results come from have half in the morning and half cals in the evening?

IMO, the longer you can go without putting a calorie in your body the better.

I think you will find that people have differing opinions on this as many seem to try and fast for 24 hours. However, in the book MM had breakfast and an evening meal, so therefore spreading his allowance. This appears to have worked successfully for him. This is also what I do, simply because I am certain I am not ever going to be able to go without food for 24 hours solidily on the fasting days, for the rest of my life (unless I'm ill). This is after all a life plan and I need to know that what is acheivable for me will work IYSWIM. If I make too many rules and set the goals too far, I will fail and I really don't want to.

    Thank you both :)

Really divided then, actually poles apart but yes, I think possibly it would be a step too far for me to not eat anything for 24 hours too.

I am so surprised that I have managed day 2 so well and for me that is a major achievement. If WW or Slimming W*orld suggested I keep to 500 cals there is no way I could have done it.

I think those two poached eggs and slice of unbuttered toast this morning saw me right.

    Thanks for your answers :)

It's best to do what you are comfortable with fuddle. This is supposed to be a way of life and you have achieved 2 fasts already:T

I don't think there's any wrong or right way. We are all individuals and what works for one might not for another.

Even the word 'diet' has me running for cover. I prefer to think of it as an eating plan. In the past, constantly restricting calories and then giving up, had my weight going up and down like a yo yo. I was convinced when I lost 4 stone I would never put it back on, but I did and more:o

Well at least I've managed to get through my fourth fast day. Not especially tempted to grab a snack or anything. Hope everyone else is doing ok:) Weigh in is Saturday, bet my DH beats me again and he has hardly anything to lose:p It's not that he eats less than me but he is certainly more active via his job.

Keep going 5:2ers we may have loads (or maybe not such a lot) to lose, but we have everything to gain.

Still trying to get back to pre-Christmas weight but it is taking an age - just can't break back through the 11st barrier:mad:

Fasting today, so for tea tonight had 3 slices of smoked ham (87 calories), 2 small dry fried eggs (130 calories) and a slice of plain bread (85 calories?) = 300 or so calories and so delicious.

I tend to eat really slowly to make it last longer:D
Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time

I think part of it is that we all recognise that dieting is much more difficult to do than giving up other things that aren't good for us, such as smoking or drinking, for example, because you can't do without food at all.

Oh I don't think I agree with you there Mado. Have you ever been a smoker?

I gave up smoking five years ago "cold turkey" and that was so hard, it took ages to really get over it, whereas I find cutting right back of food for two days is very easy.

    Actually, I was.
I quit one day... (after a positive pregnancy test) and never touched a cigarette again. It wasn't easy, but I binned all the cigarettes I had left and never bought another pack to make sure I couldn't reach for one at a low point.

done my fourth fast day today, lost 6lbs in two weeks, which is much better than I hoped for!

Today I've been mainly eating tinned new potatoes!!

    - coffee at breakfast time, a sort of potato salad for lunch, with a small tin of tuna in water (63 cals) - was very filling and easy to make, will make again - it was just 200g new potatoes (106 cals) 100g beetroot (37cals) with sliced onions, gherkins, capers, natural yoghurt and dill on top. About 250 cals and quite tasty! (Also reasonably filling)

Just had the remainder of the potatoes (130g) in a 1 egg spanish omlette, with sliced tomatoes and garlic!

for those who are restricting calories on non fast days, apparently this may not help weight loss... I will try and find the info I read and post a link.
  • Here's the info on eating high fat foods etc on non fasting days - admittedly, it relates to ADF (Alternate day fasting) rather than the 5 2 diet specifically, but the findings are interesting:
Dr Varady has finished a trial, to be published next month, in which she took two groups of volunteers doing ADF for 10 weeks. One group were put on a low-fat diet on their feed days, while the other were encouraged to eat lasagnes, pizza — a typical American high-fat diet. As Dr Varady explained, the results were unexpected.
“When they signed up for the study, the people randomised into the high-fat group weren’t happy because they assumed that they wouldn’t lose as much weight as those randomised to the low-fat diet. But they did. People on the high-fat diet were losing as much and sometimes more weight, week after week.

  • I'm another new firm lover of the old tinned potatoes! :T I was quite surprised how many I got in the tin (yeah, I checked the weight and cals) and with the chicken and mushy peas it looked ok on the plate, I thought I would have needed a side plate but it was ok on a normal sized dinner plate.

Had another fantastic sleep! I love fast days for sleeping! I know they don't suit everyone but they really work for me. I've also found I can work out for longer on a fast day. Last night I ran for over an hour, I swear I am turning into into Forrest Gump ;):p

Have a lovely weekend everyone
