I'd love for those who say steroids don't cause massive weight gain to go on them for a few weeks and see what happens- I had 39 days of hell on them, didn't even improve the problems I was taking them for, go try it folks and see if you are still singing the same tune!!

While it is quite simple, and relevant, to say "eat less move more", the fact is the human body is a very complex organism. Science has barely scratched the surface and even early research is showing complex, differing chemical and hormonal reactions in people where food and eating is concerned. I accept that, for the majority, the above advice probably would work. But, that is not everyone by a long stretch and the human body is not a simple thing, and shouldn't be treated as such.

I'm pleased to see more posts about daily fasting, I am back to doing daily 16 hour fasts and I feel great. Haven't weighed myself in a while, but I do have health problems and part of that is I struggle to lose weight so i'm not the best advert for weight loss on daily fasting.

I cannot recommend strongly enough to increase fluid intake during any type of fasting. Just for the simple reason alot of our fluids come from food and if someone is eating less that equals less fluids going in.

Morning, glad you feel better today. I too feel much better than I did after my first fast, although I did wake up ridiculously early with a rumbly tum! Just had my breakfast, so hopefully onwards and downwards( the numbers on the scales obviously) !

I am glad you feel better too:) I'm not fasting again until Monday and have been reasonably disciplined today about making better food choices, but I refuse to count calories today.

I have saved a bag of sweets all week for my Friday night treat and was contemplating demolishing the lot:o but then I thought ....no I worked too hard yesterday, I'll just have a few and save the rest for another time :D

Can do little if any exercise at the moment as still recovering from my slipped disc. I have truely had enough of it and can't wait to get back out walking and cycling. That should make the pounds drop off a bit easier. It's funny but when we've had a fairly long cycle ride I really don't want to eat anything much.

Good luck to all Saturday Fasters:T

So Ive been following this for a few weeks now, after a colleague mentioned that his brother was doing it. Ive never seen the TV programme. So far, Ive been ok with the fasts, but havent really lost any weight. I suffer from PCOS for which I take metformin (not that it makes a blind bit of difference in my case). I started using My Fitness Pal this week, and am actually quite suprised at how high my sugar intake is, which im trying to address. However it has made me a bit obsessive about not going over my calorie 'limit' on either the feast or fast days. Has anyone combined fasting with low-carbing? I do find I feel A LOT better when I cut down on carbs (not really a big fan of bread, pasta, potatoes etc, which I find Im eating more of lately). Was just wondering if the two ways of eating would be ok together?
As a bonus, Ive found that fasting 2-3 days a week for the past 2 months has given me 30 day cycles for the first time in years!!!!
  • I have PCOS too and am excited to see that 5:2 has had a positive effect on your cycles! I'm only on my second fast day (1st week) and so far I really think this is the diet for me forever more! Have to admit though that I am not monitoring calories on 'feast' days though- I think I will when/ if weight loss slows down but not until then...

The fact that they barely eat doesn't change the fact that they still probably eat more than they use, or eat just enough to cover their needs but started the medication already obese.

How do you think they get their weight from?

It's a simple balance based on universal laws of physics... the energy in the form of food that goes in must be used or it accumulates. To lose weight you must use more than you ingest.
It's not as simple as the "end of" the rude poster they were replying to put though is it, there are many causes of overeating and it's not helpful or polite. If you do not know what you are doing you can stuff up your metabolism so that even though you are eating less than before you continue to put on weight as you eat less.

Well, I know perfectly well that metabolism can work very differently under a range of conditions. But it remains that your body cannot create mass from nothing under any circumstances.

People used to learn the world was flat as well. They were wrong too.

Again, laws of thermodynamics, tried and tested science trump anyone's anecdotal evidence everyday of the week.

Medication can slow down one's metabolism. But it does not change the fundamentals of a calorie. If your metabolism is halved by medication, from 2000 to 1000 calories a day, if you eat 1000 calories you CAN NOT gain weight (excluding water weight).

Medication can also trick one's brain into whether one is full or not. Again, the fundamentals of a calorie is not changed, if you don't put a single calorie above that which your body burns you will not gain weight.

You can swear until you are blue in the face that 'I ate hardly anything and gained a stone', but you can't expect us to forget science and take your word for it.
  • I attempted a 3rd fast today, didn't really work, terrible nights sleep . Probably had circa 1000cals, be asleep by 9pm. Down 13.25 lbs since new years, which is good if slightly annoying.[/QUOTE]

Is the no sleep thing part if fasting as I have struggled so much on my fasting days?

I am not sure what you mean. I don't tend to have a trouble sleeping after a day's fast. I do think it is important to have a good nights sleep if you are going to fast, especially if you have work. The days I have slept well have been much easier then the days I haven't.
