Mmmm interesting take on it, I would've thought maybe if they don't excercise enough could play a factor, or certain medication could play a factor ...or any other of a myriad of things ... but no ... People are fat cause they eat too much ...end of ...
Well, it's not really controversial... Just a little blunt!
To gain weight, there has to be some imbalance between what you put in (food) and what you get out (energy) of your body.
So yes, people get fat because they eat more than their requirements are.
But, of course their requirements are not all the same. Your diet, your activity level, your age, your gender, your medication, your genes , your muscles (or lack of), and apparently now, when you feed your body all have some effect on your metabolism.
So it isn't as simple as the guidelines say;because on average a woman requires 2000 kcal per day doesn't mean that it's your personal requirement.

It has to be said, people do get fat because they eat too much. Fat is excess energy stored away for a rainy day. The only way that excess energy can get into their bodies is through their mouths.

its funny cause i know of several people that barely eat but are on steroid medication etc that are classed as extremely obese, and these people do rarely eat, i know this for a fact due to working with them 24/7

the most interesting thing is to look at why people eat more calories than they need - and it's there that many need to act to alter behavioural patterns, addictions, educate themsleves etc.
It's simple that people get fat when they eat more caloies than they need, it is not fair thought to say, simply eat less to lose the fat. human beings are way too complex to make that work in a lot of cases.

Of course certain medical conditions and medicines will make people appear fat, but it has to be said that these unfortunate people are the minority of the overweight and obese people in the population.
the more we shy away from facing up to that fact that as a nation we're just consuming a bit too much on a regular basis (which is all it takes to get over weight), the worse the problem is going to become and that's to nobody's advantage.
    Trying to keep in budget.

    Hi all
I was going to start on Wednesday and managed really well all day until evening when I was just desperate for chocolate and the craving wouldn't go away. So, dear reader, I ate it - a huge bar:eek:

However, happy ending, I did my first fast day of the year yesterday. I also bought the book for £2.95 in Tesco and will have a read.

I fing I need hot filling food so have done an enormous vegetable stew in my slow cooker and on non fast days have a bowl. I'm not counting calories on my "feast" days as I want to begin to have a healthy relationship with food and eat when hungry.

I am also trying to drink more water but it doesn't came easy:o.

The fact that they barely eat doesn't change the fact that they still probably eat more than they use, or eat just enough to cover their needs but started the medication already obese.

How do you think they get their weight from?

It's a simple balance based on universal laws of physics... the energy in the form of food that goes in must be used or it accumulates. To lose weight you must use more than you ingest.

I may be wrong, but doesn't steroid medication stimulate the retention of water and not fat?

It does and it can also redistribute fat stores around your body and can increase your appetite.
But I suspect, fluid retention alone wouldn't be sufficient to turn a healthy weight person into an extremely obese one.

This opinion is nearer the truth, I have also altered it slightly to reflect reality.
