Well, I fasted today, and it was a doddle! Completely different from Monday. I went to the gym at 2 pm then had a grilled chicken leg and loads of sauteed spinach, all with my usual black coffees and green teas. Felt great all day, going to bed now and looking forward to my brekkie tomorrow!

Good luck to everyone fasting tomorrow - hope it's a great day for you too!

I'm so sorry but I have no idea what a tia is :o
A transient ischaemic attack (TIA) causes symptoms similar to a stroke. With a TIA, the symptoms go completely within 24 hours (whilst with a stroke, the symptoms are usually more permanent).

I'm so sorry but I have no idea what a tia is :o But as for the cognative function improvement, excuse the pun, but if my memory serves me well :p hunger is one of the few times your brain creates new brain cells. If you watch the documentry brain function is discussed at different parts. Reactions improve, but that was doing more dramatic version of fasting and then the new brain cells.

You can only try 5:2 and see how you get on I guess

Ooh and get medical advice - if I don't say it, Andrea will only come on and post it ;):p

Tia is transient ischemic attack ... Otherwise known as a mini stroke ... I have the drs on Friday so will deff have a chat with him about it before I make my decision, I try to do low carb/ paleo just now but do wonder with me working night shift this may also help me

I am sadly addicted to sugar and caffeine ( due to working shifts )
That is a battle that I really hope to defeat soon :)

    Cheers

Might have guessed that the ML site would have a forum on the 5:2 diet. Definitely the place to come for support and advice. We have been on this diet for 4 weeks now and much to our surprise don't find it difficult. We fast on Mon and Wed; I have 3 meals a day, my husband 2. He has been surprised at the quantity of food I'm giving him. It makes such a difference not using fat or sugar. We are 'careful' the rest of the week but will be having the ocassional meal out.
I have lost 4lbs so far, he hasn't weight himself but is doing it more for the health benefits discussed in the Horizon programme.
This seems to be the easiest diet I've ever done (yes there have been quite a few!)

Not sure if this is mentioned elsewhere but I've found some super recipes on the Lavender and Lovage site. Lots of flavour and low in calories. One of our favourites is the Hungarian mince. I used smoked paprika from Tescos which is quite hot.

Good luck :T It does get easier .... for me it's knowing that I am going to have a fast free weekend helps me get through a Thursday fast. I am splitting my cals up tomorrow too. It works better for me.

Good luck to you too:T and all others fasting tomorrow. I'm still up so already beginning to drink water. 2 glasses down so far and possibly one to take to bed. I'm getting a head start because I am beginning to think I don't drink enough, although I thought I did. However, I was quite shocked today to realise I had only 1 herbal tea and 2 small cups of water between 7:30am and 8pm which is definately not enough:o I feel really cross with myself -it's not like I don't know the importance of drinking lots -so lesson learned;)

  • My only problem so far was on the first 2/3 fast night I had dreams about food. I thought I would eat like crazy the day after the fast but I didn't but those food dreams were so real :)

Hi all, hope you don't mind if I join you. I have been contemplating this diet for a few weeks now and lurking on this thread for a while before taking the plunge! I did my 1st fast on Tuesday, which I found quite easy, I split my calories into 2 meals, lunch and dinner plus a banana mid morning as I was at work and didn't think I would make it through to lunch without any food. Although the fast day was OK, I felt absolutely terrible yesterday, a banging head and felt kinda spaced out most of the day:( I am having another fast day today, so hoping I don't feel the same tomorrow.

I've not got a lot to lose, I lost about a stone with WW and kept it off all last year, but over Christmas and New Year 4 or 5lbs crept on and I would like to lose them, and this plan is so much more simple than WW, but if I feel ill again tomorrow I may have to have a rethink.
  • Hi,

I am very enthusiastic over this diet and am half way through my second week. Yay!

Has anyone read the 5:2 diet book by Dr Mosley & Mimi Spencer?

My comment / question relates to page 54 where it mentions a study from 2005 in which a group of healthy men fasted from 10pm until 6pm the next day (20 hours). On normal days they were allowed to eat heartily. At the end of the study they had not changed their body composition or lost weight.

Does anyone have anything to offer to explain this? Or point me in the right direction (Dr Mosley's contact email address would be ideal?) in which I can discover more. My wife and I are in deep discussions over it.

    Thanks.

This is sort what we do, but it's generally 21-22 hours, basically missing out breakfast and dinner, we do it every four days, both of us have lost and continue to loose weight.

Welcome Sues48:) I too had a dreadful 1st fast day on Monday, this is my 2nd fast day today. I am making sure I drink more water today. I have split my 500 cals into 2 x 250. Breakfast was 250 cals leaving me 250 for later on. I am hoping for a better day today too.:)
