  • If I was running a freecycle group, I'd delete posts requesting pristine goods like that!

my local freecycle is fantastic,i've had a bath,a cooker, ready chopped seasoned wood,2 phones for teens, all much appreciated and desperately needed.
our local home ed group also has had loads of paper/card/toys/climbing ropes
    from there.
maybe it works because its a fairly poor rural area ,council only collect once or twice a year for large objects and people are generous.Several local relifgious groups have promoted freecycle to their members as agood deed too.
yes you get the occasional abuse but most items are now being offered on a fair offer policy or asking for a reason why you want the item.charities also ask for things too and people "borrow" things for visiting relatives.
sorry some of you are having a bad time with it.
My family would really struggle without it
Every day above ground is a good one ;)

It's good to hear it's working as it should, in some areas. I've given away a bed, stepladders, and a microwave oven. I barely got a thank you, and really did gag when a guy turned up in his 4 wheel Range Rover to pick up the microwave, claiming he needed it to heat up his baby's milk !!! Yea, right. I have to confess, I pointedly stared at his Range Rover and then eyeballed him and said 'it'll tide you over til you can afford something better'. He definitely blushed and scooted off quick.

to be fair, i borrowed my dads land rover to collect something, my car wouldn't hold it, but i did explain to giver, and they were fine, but it made me realise maybe not to judge everyone too harshly, as i could have been. just a thought.

Fair point! It can be easy sometimes to jump to conclusions

  • Why should it matter how much money someone has as to whether or not they can use freecycle? Freecycle is for everyone, not just for people with low incomes or on benefits.

The Queen herself can come and collect my old paving slabs if she wants. As long as they are out of my garden, i couldn't care less who they went too.
    What the Deuce?
  • Anyone know of a lawn mower, getting a house of my own with child, can't wait, first time to have my own home for lots of years. Have little to nothing but don't care, it will be my front door.

Have you tried joining freecycle. Go here - http://uk.freecycle.org/ to find your local group.

    Perfectly put my dear
I think the point is that freecycle is about keeping things off the rubbish tip. Things like concrete slabs and fishtanks are the sort of things that people tend to throw out without a second thought. In fact, i offered some concrete slabs yesterday. They were in horrible condition but people wanted them for shed bases. A few years ago we would have taken them straight down the tip.

Asking for things like MP3 players, Brand new furniture and fully working cars is not really what freecycle is about. People seem to forget its about recycling and not a free personal shopping website.
Hate and I do mean Hate my apple Mac Computer - wish I'd never bought the thing
    Do little and often
Please stop using the word "of" when you actually mean "have" - it's damned annoying

If I'm giving stuff away - such as a perfectly good microwave, recently - I'd personally prefer it to go to someone who's struggling to buy one and having trouble making ends meet, rather than someone who can easily buy one. It's personal choice - we give things to whoever we wish.
My gripe is with the people who clearly gather up stuff to sell on Ebay and carboots ( a few in our group have been caught out that way), and those who are terribly selective about what they want, advertising for goods which must be in immaculate condition etc. As you said yourself, "people seem to forget its about recycling and not a free personal shopping website"
