Maybe only dad drives but mum likes to do the shop, maybe they think its a good expereince for their kids to learn how to buy food, look for bargains, choose the best fruit and veg - after all it would be all our fault if the kids were unequipped with this basic skill.

For record if we all go shopping its my husband who puts random stuff in the trolly, whinges about being bored and rides the trolley up and down the aisle - not the kids!! Though no one stands in the trolley so at least I'm not in everyone's bad books.
People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

I went down to 3 days a week at work last year, and now I go to Asda at 7:30am on a Monday when it opens for the week (24-hour branch). Bliss - no-one there. :D

When my schedule goes wrong and I end up in there mid-morning on a Saturday, it makes me grumpy.

Staff that don't acknowledge customers, and walk past them like they don't exist, or look at them as a huge inconvenience. The training needs to be much better.

I hate it when parents let the kids 'push' the trolley without keeping an eye on them - I've been rammed a few times by a learner trolley driver!

another pet hate is rude shoppers who feel the need to push past while I am browsing a section of the aisle - a simple 'excuse me' will alert me that I am in your way and I will move! however if you stand there tutting at me, I suddenly find the item in front of me extremely interesting!!

I know I'm going to get panned by a load of parents but surely they can either sit in the allocated "trolley seat" or walk?

You won't get panned by this parent, I can't stand it either.

Quite aside from being dangerous and unhygienic, the trollies are not designed to carry the weight of some of the children that get shoved in them.

    1. When I see them they are usually jumping about or hanging over the edge of the trolley

A good friend of mine was the unfortunate witness to a fatal accident as a result of this. :( Not as unfortunate as the poor family involved though.

While we're hovering around the subject of kids in supermarkets, can any parents on here explain to me why whole families go to the supermarket?

It might be that for some it's a family outing - or they are going somewhere before or after shopping.

FWIW, I think children should be in the actual trolley seat. if they won't go (or are too big) for the actual trolley seat, younger ones can be placed on reins. Older ones, brought up to behave in the supermarket and not run about. Better still, get them involved in actually doing the shopping themselves so they are helping. :)

i get up early during the school holidays, even tho my children have grown up and left home, so i can avoid other peoples children. i dont see the need for them to be in the trolley unless they are little, then they should be strapped into the child seat

My pet hate round supermarkets is when parents open food (that's not even been paid for) and the child eats it on the way round the supermarkets.

My pet hate is people walking around eating things before they buy them.

    You cannot be that hungry!

I hate children in trolleys too! Not so much for hygiene, but because a trolley is used to carry food and not a child. Normally the children inside the trolleys are big enough to walk around the supermarket nicely anyway!

I remember when i was little i would stand on the back of it, but wouldn't dare go inside it.
  • My pet hate is when the check-out operators yap to each other or to other members of staff when I'm being served. It's the height of rudeness!
