The police never fail to prove how useless they are! It can't be that hard surely to track them via the electrol roll or even contacting the local gp surgeries for all the address of patients by the name. Failing that why not go to every estate with the word mount in and knocking on number 23?

Mobile phones can be traced too as to their location.

I would have thought the police would be able to get the number she called from and trace it from there

I thought this too... when my OH was 6 his dad died with just him in the house... he dialed 999 but didn't know what to say and froze ... they traced the call to locate him

From a landline that would work but from a mobile it's nearly impossible.

How do they trace missing people then from their mobiles?

Can't they locate the signal from it or something like that?

They use a triangulation method in most cases. Your cellphone picks up the signals of approximately three towers and chooses the strongest signal to make calls from. To trace a cellphone, they will check to see which towers the cellphone is currently in contact with and work from there. However, in a built up area, this can take a long time due to the fact that you cannot be precise with this method, and in the event the cellphone is only connected to one or two towers it is even less precise.

Some phones can be tracked with their GPS function if it is enabled but this is a lot less common.

Also worth remembering, if the cellphone battery dies or the cellphone is damaged in any way, the signal vanishes.

I expect the police are making other enquiries as well as a public appeal for information. Every address with 'mount' in it in west Yorkshire will be a lot of addresses so it makes sense to put it on the news as well. I hope they find the poor mite :/
