Surely it's these differences that make the world more interesting?

Indeed ... I wonder how everyone on this thread would react if the question was about why have tattoos instead of why wear make-up?

I've no idea why that's relevant, tattoos and makeup are very different, with entirely different histories and cultural significance.

Why are they different? One's permanent, I realise that - but they are just people trying to make themselves look more attractive in their own way, I think?

Maybe not for you, but for me, it IS extra time spent in bed. On the rare occasion where I have a work meeting, I DO set my alarm clock 20 mins earlier, to allow for me doing my make up. In the same way that I have 10-15 mins built into my routine already for breakfast. I know that I can get up 10-15 minutes later on occasion, and grab breakfast on the way to work instead (though I prefer to eat at home).

That reason doesn't seem like a good one to you, because you've always incorporated the application of make up into your routine. I haven't. Nor do I think it's an important one, so I'm not about to swap that extra time in bed for applying make up.

We're different, we're different priorities, and that's OK. I don't have to do things your way, or vice versa. Neither is right or wrong.

I don't know how you manage to get everything done in 30 mins. It takes me 45 (without applying make up).

When I apply make up, I like to take my time, otherwise I make silly mistakes. So foundation, applied with a brush, focusing on under the eyes first, any spotty areas, and then the rest of the face. Then I apply a pale rose powder all over. Then a light blusher to cheeks, a quick sweep accross the nose, chin and forehead (helps to even out the skin tone to look a little more natural - note it's a quick sweep so it's a light covering). Then comes the eyeshadow. Then eyeliner, on the upper lid only during the day. I'm blonde too, so I'm not sure how that affects eyeliner? Anyway, then it's onto mascara. A light application only as I don't like loads. Then I use the eyelash curler. Then I apply either a lipstick or a lipbalm (lip gloss is far too irritating!).

I honestly don't know how you can do all that in just 5 mins. If I tried, I'd look a right mess as I'd make mistakes left right and centre. :rotfl:

So maybe then its only extra time in bed for people who dont wear it in the first place then as it would be a new thing? Or who take a long time in putting it on? So it doesnt apply to the people who do.

Thats why its irritating to read that apparently its time I could have spent in bed according to posts on here, when its not.

I dont like to try to get ready in 30 mins believe me :), but if I were to wake up late, and I had to leave in 30 mins to get to work on time, I could do it, and somewhere in there would be putting on 'my face' and if I had to substitute it for breakfast to spend more time on it and eat later, then I would. But I could easily wash my face, do teeth and make up in ten mins, 5 mins hair brushing/straightening, 5 mins to get dressed, and 5 mins to get breakfast, and then 5 to grab my bag, shoes and nip to the loo lol!

So if I have an hour, then Id just do the same as above but double the time for everything.

So I dont have a specific time built in for anything specific, just a 'list' of things that have to be done, but those times will alter. Like when I was being lazy the other week, got up late and had to get ready in 20 mins. I still have to do all that stuff just in a massive rush!

I dont use eyelash curlers, I personally find them a waste if you have a good mascara and they dont make enough of a change to bother with, and I dont put anything on my lips. With the eyeliner, I mean I dont use like a liquid style one, it just looks way too dark. So I use a brush to make one with eye shadow or a soft foamy pencil one from ruby and millie. I guess its just years of practise in that I can do it fast.

If I was really in a mad rush and had to get out the door, then Id just do my foundation/concealer/powder as thats all Im mainly concerned about, I can live without the rest. Or use a compact thing from No.7 which you could put foundation on in about 30 seconds if you wanted - and a quick check in the mirror for no orange jawline :rotfl:.

My DHs brother had his ears pinned back. It didnt really work though. I dont think he particularly cares now though, not sure if thats more to be older, or being a man.

I think you made a lot of good points in your post, so apologies for only picking up on the bit I've quoted.

I think that part of the answer is as simple as 'practice'.

If someone uses make-up every day, then that may explain why they can 'put on their face' more quickly than someone who only does it occasionally.

Also, some people will find that the more they use make-up, the more they realise that they can get a similar effect with less effort ('practice' again).

Or they learn how to enhance what they already have (the 'me, only more so!' look) rather than trying to change it.

My analogy would be my hair. It is stubborn, opinionated and does what is right for it - and hell mend what anyone else expects of it. Karmic in a way. Generally I just wave the hairdryer at it, working with its natural tousled look, and head out into the big wide world.

On the odd occasion I feel that that the loose ends ought to be tidied up, it takes me ages to blow dry and straighten. Far longer than it takes my sister, who does her hair every day, but is not fussed about putting on make-up.

She says it's because of 'practice'. I reckon her hair is just naturally better behaved. We might both be correct ;)

I think that it's the permanence of tattoos that makes it different, tbh.

If you get a tattoo, or a piercing, those are permanent.

A haircut (as opposed to 'style') will take some time to grow out.

A make-up 'look' that you don't like can be literally wiped off straight away.

When it comes to the 'every day' idea, it really only applies to make-up. It's the only one where you start each day knowing that you have the choice of using/having it that day or not.

I don't get the idea that "it's time I could have spent in bed" either.

I'm a champion sleeper in the mornings. Seriously.

I don't find it easy to get to sleep. I often wake up during the night and can't get back to sleep. I don't know (or care) if I'm technically an insomniac or not.

I do know that, come morning, I will squeeze every last possible minute out of the available sleeping/snooze time.

Yet, I still manage to swish some make-up onto the old phizzog. Often while I'm waiting for the kettle to boil and the toaster to 'ping'.

I know I could be doing dishes during that time - but there are limits!

I don't think those comments were trying to insinuate that you should be doing that. At least, I wasn't. It is just one of my reasons why I don't bother with make up every day. I'm a lazy moo! :rotfl:

I have come to the conclusion that I move at a snail pace in the morning! :rotfl:Got up a bit earlier this morning, to have a shower and blow dry my hair - took me an hour and 10 mins to get ready!

I know I can get ready quicker if needed, but unless I have a meeting scheduled at 9am, there isn't much need for me to rush as we have flexi time at work. So long as I make up the time at the end of the day, or at lunch, it's fine for me to be 10-15 mins late every now and then. A luxury, I admit.

I don't own any of the compact things, as I read somewhere that applying make up with a sponge wasn't very hygeinic. It was better to use a brush. Not sure if that's true, but I find it easier to clean the brush and I prefer the finish I get with it. I'm also pasty pale, so it's hard to find a shade that matches my skin colour. Once I have, I tend to stick to it like glue! lol

I don't use a liquid eyeliner either. Tried once. That was......interesting! :rotfl:Not where my skills lie! I have a kohl pencil (I think it is) from.......er.......virgin vie I think. It's well old, but it has a soft foamy thing on the other end to blend it a bit. :D

Never been able to find a good mascara that doesn't run or make my eyes itch (took me years to find an eyeliner that stayed put!), so I just use an 'OK' one, and then use the curler.

I'm less bothered about my ears now. Occasionally someone comments on how they look, but it doesn't bother me anymore. I'm more accepting of myself these days.

One of my brothers, and my eldest sister also had it done (before me), and they were really pleased with the results. My eldest brother has big ears too, but he's never cared, and my other sister was the only one to get away without them! One of my neices was born with them though, and the doctors now suggest that they were a headband on them for the first few weeks (or something like that), in order to get them to naturally sit back against the head. But, you know, babies move around a lot so that thing never stayed in place! He ears do tend to stick out a little now (she's 9), but she doesn't seem to notice or care. I just hope the kids at secondary school don't pick on her for it. That's when it seemed to start with me and my siblings. Primary school kids don't seem to give a monkeys (thankfully).

Some people take more than an hour to get ready in the morning? I can get myself and my two kids up and out the house in 45 minutes...

I guess I'm just slow! lol But compared to at least one friend, I'm speedy Gonzalez! Her concept of time seems to be out of whack though! She thinks it takes her 5 mins to do her hair. That is only true if the definition of 5 mins has changed to 45 mins! Yes, she is frequently late.
