I have noticed many of the athletes at the Olympics have make up on.

:D Its pretty subtle (apart from the gymnasts of course), but on some of them you can tell if you look very closely! So clearly they must want to look like that too. Which makes sense.

Hang on, aren't we meant to be respecting everybody's makeup related choices? Maybe they're perfectly happy for it to be noticeable!

My apologies (and another :o) - I misread claire's first post to say that she hadn't noticed the athletes wearing makeup. As I hadn't either, I immediately jumped to the wrong conclusion.

thesedays, since i got older (am in my early 40s), I've taken to not wearing it on some days when i'm feeling rushed in the mornings, but generally i wear it, but it's just the barest minimum of eyeliner, kohl and blusher and it's applied for the 'natural look'. w/o it my eyes are non-existent and i feel good afterwards. on nights out, it's the same but with added mascara and some lippy. i tend not to go for foundation as i'm that bit older, it tends to show more...

I absolutely hate wearing make up. I will only wear it when I go out clubbing or to a special function, and then I only wear foundation, eyeshadow, mascara and a bit of lip gloss. I'm lucky in the sense of I have a fairly good complexion and so I'm happy to go without, but even on the photos of me where I'm wearing make up the only give away I'm wearing it is my silver eyeshadow.. I certainly couldnt wear it every day.
My mate on the other hand is religious about her ton of slap every day. We had a conversation the other day that made me laugh - she quite likes this guy and she said if she ever got lucky with him she would set her alarm for really early so she could touch up her make up in case he woke up and should see her without her full face on!! That did make me laugh at how uptight some people are about it.

But that time wouldnt be spent in bed though. So its not a reason. I dont think 'Oh I need to get up at x time to put make up on.'

I just do it at some point between getting up and leaving the house. Same as brushing my hair, eating breakfast, getting dressed etc. Which I can do in 30 mins to one hour depending how lazy I am feeling/how late I got up! :)

Id take about 2 mins for foundation, another 2 for concealer/powder/blusher. And then 1-2 for eyeshadow and mascara. I cant see what you'd really be doing in 20mins?

I dont use eyeliner, I use eyeshadow to make a liner as Im blonde so big thick eyeliner just looks weird on me.

Maybe not for you, but for me, it IS extra time spent in bed. On the rare occasion where I have a work meeting, I DO set my alarm clock 20 mins earlier, to allow for me doing my make up. In the same way that I have 10-15 mins built into my routine already for breakfast. I know that I can get up 10-15 minutes later on occasion, and grab breakfast on the way to work instead (though I prefer to eat at home).

That reason doesn't seem like a good one to you, because you've always incorporated the application of make up into your routine. I haven't. Nor do I think it's an important one, so I'm not about to swap that extra time in bed for applying make up.

We're different, we're different priorities, and that's OK. I don't have to do things your way, or vice versa. Neither is right or wrong.

I don't know how you manage to get everything done in 30 mins. It takes me 45 (without applying make up).

When I apply make up, I like to take my time, otherwise I make silly mistakes. So foundation, applied with a brush, focusing on under the eyes first, any spotty areas, and then the rest of the face. Then I apply a pale rose powder all over. Then a light blusher to cheeks, a quick sweep accross the nose, chin and forehead (helps to even out the skin tone to look a little more natural - note it's a quick sweep so it's a light covering). Then comes the eyeshadow. Then eyeliner, on the upper lid only during the day. I'm blonde too, so I'm not sure how that affects eyeliner? Anyway, then it's onto mascara. A light application only as I don't like loads. Then I use the eyelash curler. Then I apply either a lipstick or a lipbalm (lip gloss is far too irritating!).

I honestly don't know how you can do all that in just 5 mins. If I tried, I'd look a right mess as I'd make mistakes left right and centre. :rotfl:

The best way I can describe make up for me would be a form of 5 min cosmetic surgery every day then.

So lets say instead of you having an operation, there was some kind of 'make up' that would pin your ears back every day and only took a couple of mins. Then perhaps you would be doing that rather than having had to have gone through an operation because you didnt like that particular part of yourself.

And that could apply to anyone who has had something like that done.

Well there isnt something that is a quick fix for my skin. So I put on make up. There isnt another option to fix it.

Life is too short to spend it hating how you look, if you can do something about it and want to change it.

It's alright Claire, I get it (if I didn't, I wouldn't ever feel the need to wear make up, but I do - especially for photos). I'm not saying I don't understand, or that anyone should stop doing it. Just that I don't do it everyday, and the reasons why.

Would I have chosen a non surgical option, instead of surgery?? I don't know. Perhaps my Mum would've told me to wait until I was 18 in that case, and insisted I use the non surgical option instead. But, I think it was probably likely that I would one it over and done with in one go, rather than having to deal with it every day.

That said, they didn't do a fantastic job, and one ear still sticks out a little (and def more so than the other). But it no longer bothers me. A lot of things that used to bother me about my appearance no longer do, so maybe I just would've stopped caring at some point? I really don't know. It's hard to say without being in that position now. Without having had to put up with years of bullying. I changed schools, and the new school was very anti bullying, so that might have stopped too. But then, adults can be just as cruel sometimes, so who knows. I don't know.

But I absolutely agree - if you hate it, and can change it - go for it.

I think this advertising malarky must work :o

I am 43 and normally a make up free person other than on special occasions, but after reading this thread over the last few days, I went out today to invest in some BB cream and touche eclat for every day. Somehow, I would rather be the well adjusted lady who spends 5 minutes to improve on mother nature on a daily basis, than the slightly unhinged fanatic seeing psychosis or neurosis in everyone who is not completely au naturel on a daily basis. The make up wearers definitely come across as being the ones to copy on this thread at least! :D

That last part is just as bad as the 'fanatical' non make up wearing people you're talking about.

I don't wear it every day, but nor have I lambasted anyone else for doing so, or made judgements against them.

There are clearly individuals on both sides of this discussion, who are as bad as each other.

This thread and some of the comments really sadden me as it seems as women we should be supporting each other in the decision whether or not to wear make-up. There are those who wear it because it makes them feel good and others who wear it to give them confidence to face the world. On the other side there are those who don't wear it as they are happy in their own skin and others who don't wear it as they lack the confidence to wear it. Wherever you are on that spectrum no-one should be made to feel inferior by their choice.

    Thank you! Well said! :)

To be honest, ive got to the stage where i dont care a damn what people think of me. Pretty old fashioned i know, the only person who i do take notice of their critisism is my husband (and even then half the time i dont think its justified).

I think there is no right or wrong answer here, it's like asking why shape your nails, why pluck your eyebrows, why wear tailored clothes as opposed to loose fitting garments, why choose the particular type of fabrics you do, why choose the style of jewellery you wear, why get your hair styled, yada yada yada...

Overall grooming and effort is probably more of a reflection of respect for a given occasion I would have thought. A friend of mine doesn't wear make-up and is careful to make vegan choices when it comes to clothing, toiletries, bags/footwear, etc. It's still entirely obvious when she makes an effort for an occasion though, as I hope it is with me - different clothing, accessories, (for me, extra slap), hair dressed differently etc. I can't imagine anyone thinking 'at least splish made an effort, pity about her friend'.

All these things combine to form the persona we present to the world. They make a statement about who we perceive ourselves to be. They will vary depending on our mood, where we're going, what we expect to do, who we are going to meet etc. Our public face changes over the years also (at least mine has), depending on where we are in our lives.

Surely it's these differences that make the world more interesting?

    Why everyday make up?
That is an attitude. When I was working I normally would not do any heavy make ups but a very natural one. Foundation, loose powder and lipstick.
This is as natural as everyday change.
