My screen width is being wasted by the persistant ,orange section that lists Guides, MoneyTips, Best buys etc. This hogs the left of the screen and is soon vacant space in most threads.
Its only my opinion however.

i think the left hand side looks nasty, scrunches the forum up too much... What i think would (probably) be a better idea is...
use the left margin menu as a frame and put the forum inside it as a seperate page (if that makes sense). So you could either view it as it is with the margin there use the address of the actual forum part in the address line which would be full screen..
example.. if you go to http://www.greeceuncovered.co.uk and enter the site you have the 2 frames - top and bottom and the address is
http://www.greeceuncovered.co.uk/ie.htm
but when you click on a menu item the main body changes but the address line remains the same. If you do a right click and properties on say.. reviews the address is
http://www.greeceuncovered.co.uk/touroperators/touroperators.htm
by putting that into the address bar you see the reviews page full size..
That way the site stays how you want it but users have the option to view it full size if they wish / don't like this way.0 -
Technical Queries, Questions & Suggestions About This Site................
If you put your cursor over the above .....the whole page jerks up and down :-/A couple of things.
First i dont know about the site jigging around it doesnt with me so im confused by that.
it's a simple fix... it's the font size.
Because you've got that nasty menu the area for the actual forum part is narrower. So when you hover over
Technical Queries, Questions & Suggestions About This Site (Moderators: MSE_Moderator, MSE Mod Too) The 'Technical Queries, Questions & Suggestions About This Site' part turns bold and underlines making the text slightly bigger and it doesn't fit on the line so 'Too)' rolls over onto the next line..0 -
As i flit from site to site, i very often keep my 'favourites' displayed. Before i could read the posts as well as keep my faves displayed, but now i cant.
There is too many characters, the characters are smaller. Me no like!!This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Hmmm... I think the jurys still out on the changes. I can see what you are trying to do, but I'm not sure... it just looks too cluttered.
My first impressions are that the LHS bar is too wide and could easily be narrower. I would prefer that the navigation menu was a horizontal menu rather than vertical.
If you insist on having the LHS menu then make it narrower and you mention filling in some of the space with links to 'Top Articles'. How about links to related articles instead. For example in the credit card board, links to the recent credit card articles. If we were even cleverer you could target it even more and put links relevant to the thread, e.g. if the thread was about Balance Transfers links to the articles on BTs, or if it was about Amex links to all the articles mentioning Amex. Possible even link to similar threads. But that really depends on how the site works behind the scenes. It would really need the site to be completely run from a database for that to work properly.0 -
This bit is too small. Its scrunched up in a corner.

i think its all ok - handy having the links bar to the left, though looks a bit pants towards the bottom of the pages when just a big space. sure we'll get used to it all soon enough anway! might encourage me to go to the main site a bit more often!Mum to gorgeous baby boy born Sept 2010:j0
