why do some customers throw money at till assistants ?

There's a practice in Asia which I have adopted for my own - I always pass notes and cards (or receive them back) with two hands - it is more respectful than dropping a chewed up fiver on the counter or the like. If it's coins, or receiving change with coins when 2 hands is a bit clumsy, the second hand touches the wrist of the hand containing the coins.
It seems a fuss to begin with, but it becomes second nature and I know I personally prefer it and its reverence.0 -
When I worked as a sales assistant, I could usually suss the customers that wanted to talk and those that didn't. Someone wrote about it not being your 'right' to talk about cancer with a customer - if the customer brought it up, maybe they want/need to talk to someone away from the situation about it.0

People in Wales are chatty anyway, but most cashiers in my local supermarket are either ex-pupils or their parents.
I've never seen anyone throw money down.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.
(Pity they are mangled by this autocorrect!)0 -
I would never throw money at cashiers, or anyone else for that matter!
But, equally, why do an increasing number of shop assistants have the annoying habit of handing me my receipt and notes and then "pouring" the loose change on top of everything, saying "£4.67 change, thanks very much"!!
A) On several occasions it HASN'T been £4.67 and I've been short changed by a pound or more .
I have to waste time shuffling loose change and notes around one-handed whilst I attempt to put everything neatly away.
I understand that a man just dumps the whole lot in his pocket, but I have a purse to organise for goodness sake.
I am definitely turning into my mother

Genuine question...what order would you prefer your money to be given to you? Do you want all coins pre sorted and deposited directly into your purse?
I think, because tills are arranged with the notes at the back, it's quicker and easier to work from back to front, meaning the notes usually come out/go to the customer first.0 -
If only all of them were like you...;)When I worked as a sales assistant, I could usually suss the customers that wanted to talk and those that didn't.
I don't want a conversation thanks - I want shopping. I understand that it may be store policy for you to ask "How are you today?" so I will answer "Fine, thanks" and concentrate on sorting the bags. I'd like you to take that as a cue to start on the scanning and paying bit please.I need to think of something new here...0 -
Most people who work in shops haven't any training or experience with working with the public. Luckily some of us have manners.
As for customers who throw money at us, they're very few and far between. Most people are lovely.0 -
In the olden days* when cashiers counted back - it would be smallest to largest.Genuine question...what order would you prefer your money to be given to you? Do you want all coins pre sorted and deposited directly into your purse?

Say the total was £3.27 - the change from a fiver would be a penny "£3.28", a 2p "£3.30", 2x10p "£3.50", a 50p "£4" and a pound "makes £5". That makes it easier to grip the coins in the palm of the receiving hand while tucking away the note first then shove coins into purse or pocket. If the notes go in first, you have to swap them over OR pour coins into purse/pocket while gripping the note(s) with a finger.
I suppose I have it a bit easier than nonnatus since I can just shove it all into trouser pocket and then transfer note(s) to wallet when I've got out of the way of the next customer.

If I attempt to make a purchase and receive inappropriate service, I don't complete the purchase. I have left items on the counter, asked for the money back and left the premises. Loudly announcing my reasons.
Example: A "steak Pie" in a restaurant, the only part of the animal it supposedly came from being possibly its hide - I took it back to the counter and quietly asked for either a better meal, or a refund. The assistant looked down her nose and informed me that she was giving neither. I upped my vocal volume about 200% and told her that (a) I had not paid yet, (b) I was not going to and (c) I had no intention of paying for something so unfit to eat that it contravened the Sale of Goods and Services Act.
3 people who had recently entered, got up and left. 2 who were about to enter, turned around.
I worked in a Service occupation once. I tried hard to serve properly.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.
