You make it sound a lot more sinister than it was. She'd simply take card and say 'Thank you Mrs Ellay, hope you're OK' or something pretty much on those lines.

I'd love to see that happen when my OH accidentally takes my card out to the shops instead of his! "Thanks very much, erm... Ms Manc... *awkward silence* ...did you know we have an offer on Nair at the moment?".

Especially when someone does that at 9.05am, just after the shop opens, which then leaves no float in the till!

I can't stand shops that don't carry adequate floats. Some shops seem to go for the bare minimum £20 and *hope* that they can build up a float. Then when the sheet hits the fan they've run out and are constantly scrabbling for change and delaying customers unnecesarily. To me these shops are unprofessional when it happens all the time. If you don't want to keep £200 in change in the till then hold it out back and top up when needed. Not exactly rocket science.

Luckily you are in a tiny minority.

Customer service should be tailored towards the majority who appreciate friendly sales assistants who greet, ask how people are and make small talk. Why should people lose out on a friendly service because of a misery guts like you? :)

For what it's worth, a few years back when asked how they were, a customer did reply to me with "I've just been diagnosed with cancer". We had a frank conversation about it and they left happy.

That's because the majority of people are not 'normal'. I learnt this many years ago in customer service and have time and time again been proved right.

A shop is for buying, that is all. It is not for chatting to a stranger about anything. Why anyone would want to do this is just very strange. Personally, I think you have no right to start discussing something like cancer with a customer you dont know. They should have told you then you should have kept your mouth shut. With all due respect, what right do you have to continue a conversation like that?

I find it rather odd that after reading so many posts whining about sales assistants being 'too friendly', we get just as many threads whining about spotty sullen sales assistants who can't even be bothered to say hello.

    That poor lot can't win.

Quite honestly, I have no issue with a sales assistant keeping their mouth shut and not giving a smile. Their job is to allow you to pay for your shopping, that is all.

This is just odd and would annoy me! I cannot stand someone on a till attempting to start a conversation with me. I am there to buy something and get out, I have no interest in being there and certainly do not want a chat with a complete stranger.

If they then decided to call me by my name my blood would boil. Not in a snooty way but they don't know me so it would just be weird if they decided to make a note of my name.

When I used to work in a supermarket the staff would have random 'observations' of which they would be unaware at the time, if you weren't seen to be attempting to chat to your customers the best you'd get would be an 'amber' rating and a talking to. Believe me I had no interest in the lives of most of the customers but I expect generally cashiers who chat a lot to their customers are simply trying to impress the boss and further their own careers (well, get promoted to supervisor for an extra 6p an hour).

It would be helpful if more customers complained to the management that they do not want to engage in meaningful conversation with the cashiers, maybe then there would be less emphasis on forcing cashiers to 'chat up' the customers.

With regards to the OP though rude customers do annoy me especially those that look down on the cashiers just because of the job they do. Ironically many of those cashiers are a lot smarter than the customers and are the doctors/scientists of the future.
