why do some customers throw money at till assistants ?

At a Saisnburys near me one lady always made a point of looking at the card if that was how the customer paid and addressing them by name
This is just odd and would annoy me! I cannot stand someone on a till attempting to start a conversation with me. I am there to buy something and get out, I have no interest in being there and certainly do not want a chat with a complete stranger.
If they then decided to call me by my name my blood would boil. Not in a snooty way but they don't know me so it would just be weird if they decided to make a note of my name.0 -
If that would make your blood boil, I'd fear for your health if someone really slighted you.I'm not bad at golf, I just get better value for money when I take more shots!0

You make it sound a lot more sinister than it was. She'd simply take card and say 'Thank you Mrs Ellay, hope you're OK' or something pretty much on those lines. I don't think she was some stalker making a note of me, nor dragging me to engage in deep meaningful conversation. She simply addressed me by the name she could see and did so in a friendly manner - preferable to just being almost ignored or snarled at as some places do0 -
So I'm an annoying customer if I:
Pay for a small amount with a large note ...
Well that gives me a lot of faith that I'm valued as a customer...Wow, really hope I never end up being served by you. What an attitude!
Do you not value customers? I always did. They can be irritating, annoying and as stinky as they want but I was always happy to do my job regardless.
Just because I might moan on a random forum that a lot of people used to pay using a large note for a low-cost item does not mean that I did not value customers. I even liked most of my customers, it was just a pain in the backside when 3 in a row would pay with a £20 note for a card which cost pence, on a Saturday afternoon when the Post Office was shut and we had gone through the float we were allowed to keep.0 -

Ha ha true, ok it wouldn't make my 'blood boil' but when I am in a shop, I am not there to make friends. I have no interest in the cashier's life or how their day has been. This is mainly down to the fact that I realised a long time ago I am not a people person :rotfl: Everyone I don;t know is an idiot unless proved otherwise. This is the way to go

I certainly don't go in expecting them to prostrate themselves before me, expressing deep gratitude for the pint of milk I'm buying. Nor do I hold them to a higher standard of manners than I hold myself or other customers to, that would be an appalling attitude.
Exactly. No need to expect people to be your servants just because they work in a shop.
But equally, no need to tell someone to get over themselves because they want to feel valued as a customer, not an inconvenience.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
On another note, why don't till assistants count your change back to you any more?0

I can only assume it's because they'd get told off by an arsey manager/customer for holding the queue up.I'm not bad at golf, I just get better value for money when I take more shots!0
