Just had one of these calls at work!

Not a good start, calling me Mr<firstname> not Mr<surname>. Wanted me to confirm my home address - they hung up as soon as I declined to reveal personal information.
  • I know I'm resurrecting an old post but I had a company like this - Morgan Nicholson Ltd - call my house after purchasing our contact data from a marketing company.

They then went on to mislead my parents into believing that Sky was contacting them. They then continued to spin this story about the digital switchover causing a problem and that they needed to setup a direct debit for £7.99 for a protection plan for our Sky Box.

    Something they did not want.

I was livid. Not only does this cowboy company cold call, not explicitly explain they are NOT Sky but they spin this scaremongering story to generate a sale. I called back asking for them to cancel this immediately and I explained that I'm sure the FSA would love to hear about their practices. The woman I spoke to was not even aware that they were selling a financial product and said that they do not answer to the FSA.

I then spoke to a manager who was unprofessional, had zero customer service skills and tried to antagonise me. She did not listen or acknowledge my concerns. She did not try to arrive at a solution, she continually talked over me and took personal offensive over criticisms of the company practice.

Companies like this need to be stopped or at the very least properly regulated. It is very shady selling techniques I would go as far to say they are mis-selling products. This approach of trying to catch people out to generate a sale is what is deeply worrying.

The latest "wheeze" by one of these "warranty company" t**ts - "Simon" (from Manilla or Bangalore !!) phoned me on Tuesday to ask me about the size?? of my Sky dish as it would probably need changing shortly due to the digital switchover,so if I took out a Sky plan then I would save myself a lot of money!!!
Told him my current set up of two baked bean tins on a bamboo pole was perfectly serviceable thankyou!! At that point he rang off!

Just had a phone call from 'Sky Protect' offering to reduce my warranty cost from £9 odd a month to £5.75 as a special offer. Apparently Sky have taken on a lot of new engineers and can offer a special discount. Lady said she was definitely from Sky and she had my name and address (not on full electoral role just the edited private one). She asked me for my debit card details as Sky changing from direct debits to save me going overdrawn when they take the money. Yeah right (I wasn't born yesterday).

I said I didn't have my card on me and she demanded to know when I would have it. Said I couldn't find it. Said her name was Kirsty and she told me to ring her on 0844 846 7200 when I had my card available.

This number is not Sky (Googled it) and I feel I was nearly scammed there!

I would end up with two warranties, assuming she wasn't just trying a phishing expedition for my debit card number.

Anyway, I am not that stupid, so people be on your guard.

These people should not be saying that they are from Sky.

The only Sky protection plan authorised by Sky is run by Domestic and General.
Bearing in mind the above comments if you really want the insurance get a phone number and call them back.

    Or use the website.

If you are replying to me, I already have a Sky (D&G) warranty. Not sure where these other clowns got my details from though.

To say they were Sky and that Sky are switching from direct debit to debit card are two appalling lies to try to gain my business under false pretences. They failed.

That's a load of old b:mad:s for a start,Since when did more engineers equate to discounts?...I got one of these calls myself & when I told them I worked for Sky as an Engineer, she STILL tried to sell me a protection plan...I've had Sky Digital since it came out & only needed to call them once for a repair, which cost me £40 (then)..never needed it since so,from my perspective as a Sky Engineer, the protection plan is a waste of time & money...

You don't need one Sky warranty, let alone two!
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Hello - Not so much wanting a reply but flagging up a concern.
I and other Sky Customers I know are now being offered "insurance" for our sky equipment including the remote control. It doesn't sit quite right with me when it is equipment I must have to use the Sky Tv Package service I pay for yet Sky do not maintain or replace their equipment if it goes wrong.
The phrase "over a barrel" keeps popping into my mind.
Wondered what anyone else thinks and if this is something that Martin and Team could pick up on.
    Thanks for your time.
