I'm sorry, but that's just bad parenting from the girls' mothers. My children are 6 & 7, and for many years now have been able to sit down on their bottom at the meal table and eat politely. They tend to do the colouring books if they are there, or perhaps they might play on a mobile phone, but more likely they'd just be chatting politely with the people there. If they even thought about getting up and running round in the restaurant, they'd packed into the car and taken home pronto, and they know it. There was a period between about 18m and 2.5yrs where my son struggled to stay still, but constant re-inforcement (and having to take him home occasionally) meant that by 3 he could sit and eat his dinner nicely. There is NO excuse for a 5yr old and an 8yr old to be running around a restaurant, and I'm afraid that when you become a parent you give up "me time" and have to accept that you are "on duty" 100% of the time, even (especially) when you go out for a meal.

Exactly. But you can understand that as the token single, childless one I really can't say anything as opinions of those who have no experience are really not welcomed!

My stepmum did say to me that my dad would not have put up with them (I agreed and told her that on the odd occasion as a very young child where I was not behaving appropriately he would have no qualms in putting me over his shoulder and removing me from the eating area for a proper telling off away from those trying to enjoy their meals).

No one gives kids fizzy drinks at breakfast time

I have lots of children and find your comments irritating. You were a child once you know!

What a silly statement to make.

Of course some people give their kids fizzy drinks at breakfast time.

Why would you think no one does it, unless you know every parent and child on the planet?!

I have a few times in the past and it's not a crime as far as I know, unless there is something I'm missing? It's never made my kids hyper, unless there are certain brands which do?

Pasturesnew, if they are that bad, why don't you complain about them?

If you think they ought to sit in silence to eat, then they're children and that is unlikely.

Don't sit and dwell on it (which you're doing by posting about it), get out and do something that interests you and makes you happy! :)

Yes, what do you know.... you don't have kids ... *growl*... the growl seems compulsory.

I'm about to ... I'm off to a particular shop I spotted that's selling something I want that's £10 cheaper than other shops.... so I'm off for a 5 mile round robin beach walk in a bit.

So are you feeling a bit more cheery yourself now then OP, now that you have avoided the whiny kids at breakfast? I'm detecting a bit more humour in your posts now :). Have a good day.

I totally agree that annoying children should be banned at breakfast in hotels - maybe have "noisy" breakfast in one room and "quiet" breakfast in another!
Seriously PasturesNew, if you are looking for lodging etc, people here may be able to help if they know a rough area. For instance I know someone in Bristol who is looking for a lodger & may consider a quiet older person even if they were between jobs (as long as they could pay their rent!)
People may also have a caravan on a small site that they would consider renting out, or know of some possible options for you

[a] That's not very safe, secure or legal.
There's no address - can't get things mailed/posted to a caravan in a field. And in order to carry out a reasonable person's lifestyle, I'd want a proper address and letter box.

Doesn't stop the farmer up the road from us doing it. One of his blasted "tenants" has a caravan in a patch of woodland that has the same name as our house and uses the name of the wood as his address - needless to say, we get his mail and have done for the past two years.

but then who decides which children go in the "noisy" room and which in the "quiet" room :)? None of which helps OP because they are in a small hotel with one room only available to take breakfast in.

You could say pretty much the same thing about any pure fruit juice.

    They rot your teeth too.
