  • I remember when my mother used to dilute 1lt whole milk into 2lt of semi-skimmed milk and freeze one when we lived in South Africa (use cooled boiling water) I think I will be trying this as well. I never used to notice the difference. What are your ideas and comments on the suggestion.

BB - I do a 50/50 split with our whole milk and there really is no difference in taste to any semi-skimmed milk shop bought. Well, for me anyway.
It was seeing that it cost the same to buy whole as it was to buy semi, that i decided I'd "do it myself" at home ;)

  • When we had a really tough month we used to buy a tin of evaporated milk (18p back then 48p now) and dilute the can to 1½ litres and leave it in the fridge.

I wouldn't water down our milk as I need extra calcium and so do my children as they are growing.
  • Calcium comes from other sources such as eggs, cheese, salmon, yoghurt, rhubarb, sardines, spinach, baked bean, brussel sprouts, sesame seeds, almonds, pak choy, apricots, cabbage, brazil nuts, carrots, cashews, cauliflower, celery, butternut squash, figs, leeks kelp, kippers, oatmeal, oranges, parsley, sweet potatoes, wheat flour and many more
