I'm on with the calorie counting at the moment. Am finding it quite good as it's making me think a lot more about what I'm eating and helping me pinpoint problem areas for me - it's silly but I didn't realise how much bread and cheese I was actually eating and how many calories in them!
Yep - the only 'rule' i have is that i enter the food/calories into MFP before i eat it.
Makes you realise how much you can eat if you eat the right things (and this comes from someone who is allegric (!) to veggies)I'm so boring, my clothes wanna keep someone else warm, someone cooler0 -
Yup, it really makes you think more seeing it put down in black and white. I mean, logically you know that a white bread and cheese sandwich isn't the healthiest thing but when you see, well for the same calories you could have this, this and this instead it makes it a sink in a lot more!0

I need some major support off you lovely people.
Now i've come off my holiday from Italy (pizza, pasta and wine for nearly two weeks) and i need to get myself back on track.
Current weight 11 stone 5lb when i checked earlier which i think is far too much for my 5'6 height.
I do exercise but wonder if i need to do more. I usually go and gym about twice a week but i'm wondering if this needs to be upped as i go and use it as an excuse to be a pig and eat naughty things so my diet could be an issue.
I came back off my holiday on Thursday and ran 8.2km yesterday and this morning 9km plus some cycling/cross trainer in the gym.
My plan is to do two days 'on' followed by one day 'off' in terms of exercise.
Now the food issue. Naughty foods are pasta, bread, potatoes but is rice?
In terms of meats, you can eat fish and chicken but is lamb a naughty one? I'm assuming pork and beef are?
It makes me think there's not a lot else left...i'm always hungry after just eating a salad with no meat.
What sort of meals are good but filling?
Ps it would be nice to lose a stone but getting back to 10stone during my uni days would be amazing. I'm starting to doubt it's achievableMortgage 1: May 2012 £90,000 April 2020: £47,000

You can enjoy it even if you don't understand it and too much can give you a headache the next day J0

Southernman - firstly, sounds like you're doing great on the exercise front so have that side of it covered
Personally I don't think any foods need to be 'naughty' or banned - I know there are some foods that I love that might not be the healthiest but if I ban them completely I know I'm not going to stick to that. I think a lot of failed 'diets' come from depriving yourself for weeks and then caving in and just going overboard.
I don't really do a low carb diet so I still have pasta, potatoes, bread and rice but try to go for wholegrain rather then white and healthier versions of potatoes etc. Meat-wise, I'm afraid I'm veggie so not much help there but again, I think moderation and the way you cook things has a lot to do with it - eg grilled bacon is quite low cal, fried bacon in plenty of oil, which is what a lot of people do, is not.
I'm finding calorie counting very useful to pinpoint areas where I seem to 'waste' a lot of cals - eg something small that won't leave me full for long but that's using a lot of my days' allowance. Then I can choose to either not have it, cut down on my intake somewhere else, or do extra exercise to burn it off.
Good luck with it x0 -
My friend mentioned to me about an alternative to rice called Quinoa? Has anyone tried or heard of it?
She also mentioned how in her local health shop they sell black bean pasta that tastes the same as pasta but without the carbs. Now she's in America so i can't see something like this being available in England. A quick google has come back with no results. Does anyone use a pasta alternative at all?Mortgage 1: May 2012 £90,000 April 2020: £47,000

Hi southernman.
I have tried quinoa, to me it had the same taste as cous cous if you tried that? I wouldnt eat it on its own, I would always have to add herbs/spices or a stock cube to it, as its quite bland else.
But a good alternative!
I havent heard of the black bean pasta though, maybe its worth a browse in your loca health food shop0 -

*hugs* it is so frustrating when you're being good and the scales just aren't movingDo you measure as well? I often find I might not lose pounds but can still lose inches - especially if you're putting a fair bit of exercise in.
