Oh dear, this has the hallmark of a puppy farm breeder all over it :(

Please reconsider, don't even waste your time making the long journey, it will end in heartbreak! When buying a puppy you should have been in contact and visited the pup several times before the time comes to take it home.

These people will put on a front and have the pups in a "home" setting when you go to collect but I can guarantee they will not have been bred in the home but some dingy pen in a cold outbuilding where the poor b!tches churn out litter after litter of unhealthy pups.
“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”
  • You haven't met the mother. You haven't seen the puppies. I'd bet everything I have that this puppy comes from a puppy farm. In my friends' case they met a dog that wasn't the mother of the puppies but was claimed to be. They only found this out after she died and they went back to the house to find the same mother with another litter of grown pups just weeks after they had got their dog. I wouldn't go if I were you. I'd find a local breeder, properly registered where you can visit the puppies as they grow.

i can c what u saying! i feel cant trust anyone but some people are genuine, these awful people give all genuine dog lovers such bad name. im sure im not first to go on first visit when pup is ready to go and i wont b last but i have head screwed on. cute little pup or not if not right i will walk
  • Why couldn't you find a local breeder? One that advertises on a reputable website? That has checkable credentials? What made you pick this breeder?

These people are experts at getting you take one of their dogs, and sorry but I don't think you are planning to drive for six hours and not bring a puppy home.

The majority of people who advertise litters of pups on those websites and free-ad papers are NOT GENUINE BREEDERS!!! Please don't support puppy farm breeding. I'm sure you can find a pup from a reputable source.

Ask your vet for local breeders, one whom you can make contact with and meet regularly, even if they don't currently have any pups you can put your name down for a pup from their next litter. This is how reputable breeders work. They only have a litter when they can guarantee homes for all of them, not to breed indiscriminately then advertise them for sale in the hope people will come along and buy them.

Sorry but you come over as naive Kymrob. Kennel club registration may not be essential, but is one indication of a quality breeder. Ditto finding your breeder through the breed club, their own high quality website or recommendation from someone familiar with the breed, NOT through an unregulated advertising site. Are you going to meet the stud dog? How have you checked the health and genetics of each parent? A once over by the vet is not the same as genetic tests/ checks.

I agree with everything your saying apart from the parts in bold, the KC do register litters from puppy farms so unfortunately going through them doesn't guarantee a good breeder, not all breeders will have both the dam and the sire so I wouldn't be to concerned about that part of it. kymrob can I ask what sort of things the breeder asked you, most decent breeders will make you go through hoops before they will allow you to take one of their pups, I would walk away from this pup, I know it's hard to do but I'm afraid it's something I would do. Have a look at Puppy Love website, there's some horrific stories on there http://www.puppylovecampaigns.org/thekennelclub.shtml

OK, for a bit of balance - there are some KC registered breeders who keep dogs in outdoor runs where they are not living in ideal conditions and they churn out puppies for extra income. There are also ordinary folk (put down as back-yard breeders - BYB) who occasionally breed perfectly healthy, well-socialised puppies!

Ideally, you want a puppy born and raised in a family home, whose parents are good-natured, health screened and available for inspection. The breeders home should be clean but show obvious signs of long-term dog occupation - clean water bowls, leads hanging up, food stored indoors, dogs allowed free access to most living areas etc. KC registration is preferable, but is not a guarantee that a puppy isn't from a puppy farm. The KC is very poor at policing itself! A breed club recommendation is good, most allow any member to advertise puppies - but the fact the owner has bothered to register with a breed club is usually a good sign.

You would want to be quizzed on your lifestyle and suitability for the breed. Asked if you work and if you have a garden. You should be given a feeding sheet and sample of the food the pup has been raised on. And an offer of lifetime support should you need it.

Google all the details given to you by the breeder. Their name, address, landline and mobile numbers. Their email address too. If they have been a front for puppy farmers, they tend to keep the same one or two mobile numbers and they appear in multiple adverts.
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.
  • I'm sceptical too....

Certainly ensure you see the health check docs from the vets that were carried out before they decided to breed from their dog (if it is genuine) - if they don't have them (say they're at the vets) or haven't had them done .... walk
