    Turns out it was bolognese!

Good job I bought some new 'chinese' tubs in the 99p shop today! I can't stand not know what I've got, yet I always put it in there thinking I'll remember!:o

I can never tell the difference between bolognaise, chilli and pasta sauce-once it's frozen in tubs, it's just vaguely red goo! Need to get better at labelling, but mystery dinner is as exciting as my life gets these days :rotfl:

Re tubs in freezers - I have a (huge) supply of sticky labels (from freecycle - for one of those skinny printers with cogs either side - not found anywhere nowadays!) - I write what it is on this (in sharpie or biro) and stick to tub. Can then either peel off when empty or stick new one over (usually the case with takeaway tubs as they stick too well to these to come off! :D)

Reporting first spend today of £6.27. I needed a loaf and asked SH to get one on the way home but he was going to be back gone 7pm, so I nipped into T's when I took DD to Drama class (is on the way home, so no extra petrol) Got there for whoopsie time and succumbed...

Bread was £1.20 and everything else I bought was reduced.

Veggies for g-pigs £0.97 instead of £3, Charlotte potatoes 30p (£1), and lots of goodies/ treats making up the rest!! (2 reduced to 33% of original price, the rest 25% of original price) - figured all worked out cheaper than I could make them for, so were worth it (sort of!) Kids will appreciate them all, anyway! :D

  • We are away for a few days and won't be doing any food orders from next week, so will try and use up what we have in. Will need some allowance for when we're away....so £200 to include petrol.

    And now, a plea!
I am catering my son's christening next month, and would love some ideas that are cheap, nice and will look great on the day. I have the cake sorted - my friend is doing that - she should be a professional! But,I need ideas for the buffet lunch type thing. And, being me, I like to have a plan early on, so I can get my head around what I have to do and when, when the time comes. TIA!

How about: Mini roasted potatoes with sour cream & chives
Ready to roll or HM puff pastry cut into small squares with cheese & tomato. Mini Yorkshire puds (HM in a mini muffin tin) with egg mayo/beef & red onion marmalade or horseradish - you get the idea. Mini cream scones. Mini meringues with fruit - you need to drain the fruit well and just put in the mini nests (HM of course) at the very last minute and put them in petit four cases in case they disintegrate!. Small fruit kebabs. Small veg kebabs - onions, peppers, toms - roasted or grilled. Cheese & grapes. Carrot sticks & dip. Mini cupcakes made in petit four cases with a rosette of butter icing on top.
Spent £32 today in Sainbods on what seems not a lot.....although it did include protein rich bits and bobs for me as I have been poorly (passed out again and whisked off to A&E by ambulance ) but at least they have realised why it has been happening. Hurt my ankle and knees landing on a concrete floor, so today is my 1st day out without crutches, used DGS's buggy to hold me up :o:o:o
Oh you poor thing. Lots of hugs. At least you had your NNM to help you. :) Worth their weight in gold, chaps like that!

The Be-Ro recipe is:225g plain flour
    pinch salt (I never bother)
    50g lard
    50g marg
    cold water to mix
25g caster sugar if sweet pastry is required.

    HTH :)

I did my weekly shop yesterday, and will update sig asap. I was really annoyed in M&S. I went to buy some coleslaw, but the whole shelf was dated that day, and when I asked if they would reduce it, I was told that they would probably reduce it to 10p later in the day, but wouldn't when I was there just before lunchtime! Now, do you really think they were going to sell a full shelf of coleslaw with short dates at full price? I didn't buy any! I hope they were left with the lot.:p I'm not usually mean spirited, but I thought they were just a bit unfair this time.

  • Morning,

First post of the month! I am going to try for £350 again this month. So far I have had a mr w delivery for £66.37.

DH is obsessed with whoopsie hunting. He is working long hours so when he comes home he takes a two minute detour to mr s and goes mad for ys items.

It is really sweet of him but a) he put me over budget in July and b) the two freezers are bursting!

Hopefully I will come in under budget this month as a result.

Good luck to everyone and a massive thanks to everyone running the thread xx

  • What age is the teenager ? DIY pizzas often go down well. Either make or buy the bases before hand and get them to add toppings or get them involved in kneading and rolling the dough. For desert what about DIY ice cream sundaes. Buy a big tub of ice cream buy or make sauces and topping and let them get stuck in ?Will try to think of some more later.

BTw thank you for all the picnic ideas have both dcs +1coming back tommorow and need inspiration :)
