Yes it was the free version. Ive used AVG now on all my home systems as long as i can remember, its brilliant. I think you will find if you buy the cost version its really not that bad a price, of the top of my head something like £24 for one or two years not sure.

Firstly I loaded the Spyware by mistake but it said it was out of date. Then I installed AVG anti virus on my freinds laptop today. Anyway after I loaded the anti virus software there seemed to be a problem. I had to download the lattest updates for it which it did ok. But in the security centre the Malware Protection area is sent to an Amber colour and not Green. I tried to update Windows Defender but there was an error so tried again and there was an error.

Can anyone advise me on how to get the security up to Green or is by latop protected well enough on Amber ?

Jaxxy00 - thanks for your message, I've just given Dell a call. Re: the Internet Explorer error message, I was told to just download IEFix from here: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm and so far it hasn't crashed since....but we'll see how the rest goes! The guy was very helpful and is going to phone me back on wednesday.

I'm sorry to sound soft to you all.... but how do i check my subscores? And what should i be checking for? eeeek.

Wish i had been given that info. I started off online with tech help (very good online chat thing with instant assistance) and then he phoned me and after giving him the error message he said it was saying internet explorer had crashed and i would have to do a system restore. He talked me through it and now ive lost all i had put on here (nothing important though). Ive just thought, when i checked my subscores after restoring im sure they were higher. Now going to check.

Ahll, sorry but i cant help you with the AVG spyware problem as im having the same issues myself. Ive just updated the windows defender and uninstalled the AVG spyware.

Go on start (windows flag thing bottom left, sorry if thats maybe sounding obvious but it is different to how it used to be on this Vista) then click 'Control Panel'. Go to the 'System and Maintenance' section and click that. In that section will be a heading 'System' then there will be smaller sub headings in there and one of them will be 'Check you computers Windows Experience Index base score'. Click on that and you will then see all your scores.

Yes as i thought after restoring my subscores are different. All are the same but the graphics is now 2.9 instead of 2.8!! Confusing considering its only supposed to be hardware and not software which alters the scores.

    ace, cheers jaxxy :)

    Processor: 4.6
    Memory: 3.9
    Graphics: 2.8
    Gaming: 3.1
    Hard Disk: 4.7
    Base score: 2.8

i haven't altered anything on the laptop as yet, i imagine those scores are what everyone else initially has?

Thats interesting, your hard disk score is less than mine. Mine is 4.8 and my sisters (i ordered for her at same time as mine) is 4.9. The 2.8 graphics is what i had until i restored. Strange how we all have the same system and yet slight variations between them.
  • Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how do you update the graphics score?

Are there some drivers I need to download from somewhere?

I downloaded the Catalyst 32 Vista drivers to solve the hibernate mode when closing the lid problem, but that is the only driver I have downloaded.

Is there a list of things we can download to improve the Inspiron 1501 at all?

    TIA.

I have been trying out Firefox but I cant say that I am that impressed with it so far. When I am using it it quite often freezes and says not Responsing....
I get an error meesage from microsoft saying that the error is caused by Firefox !

Is there something I can do to stop this happening ?

Uninstall firefox and then download and install it again from here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
  • Anyone know how to turn the brightness down.
I tried the Fn & down arrow but still bright for my eyes.
I have a problem with bright light in my eyes, looks like I might need to sell but would be sorry to see it go.

Not sure if dell would take it back. I only set it up on Monday.
    Hope someone can help

 Thanks to the OP. Me and a mate got one each and even though my first had to be returned I'm well pleased.
