I've heard both Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver say on their TV shows that shop bought pastry is just as good. If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me! It's also not much more expensive than the price of lard, especially for multipacks from places like Farmfoods.
I always use Bisto powder for gravy as it's so easy! I'm also a fan of Coleman's powdered pasta and caserole sauces.I got loads really cheap in Sainsburys recently when they were half price *and* 3 for 2, making them about 25p each.
They're really convenient for cooking for 1 as you can just cooks as much as you need and the rest of the packet keeps for ages. Yummy too!

I always buy puff pastry cant be faffed with the hassle and I have been known to buy shortcrust when on offer i.e. after christmas especially the all butter.
VfM4meplse, I completely agree about the pots, but in winter when I make loads of soup and adding to veggie shepards pie etc I really resent paying out for them I'm too much of a skinflint! :rotfl:0 -

Mine would be tomato sauce - I add it to lots of things as seasoning and to give my spag bols/ cottage pies a bit of a lift:T:T:TI must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0
