What's your non OS guilty secret?

  • I learnt to make puff pastry at school in the days when we still had domestic science lessons. Though it is such a faff that I rarely do. But my list of other non OS sins would be too long and boring. To those who smoke roll ups, I have wondered about this. Do you find you smoke less if you actually have to make them.? I have been thinking that I light up out of habit and wondered if it would make me smoke less.

    Oh yeah..

My biggest failure.. after trying to quit yet again (and having a pretty good go and all) I'm back on that nasty little drug called cigarettes.

*sigh* I give up giving up on them.

Oh yes, I have window cleaner, who does all the outside as house is high up, even downstairs window is higher than me. I get scared on my potty stool (which I need to reach kitchen cupboards as I am small)

I love Ikea sauce with Swedish meatballs. Such a quick and easy meal.

I should probably save electric and sweep the downstairs hard floors, but have an obsession with dog hair and find vacuuming it easier aswell as it getting the hairs up.

When we were decorating we had takeaway 3 days in a row, because by the time we were finished I could not be bothered to cook. Did go for healthier options but budget will suffer for it.

If I spent less time on here I would probably have more time to be more OS, my house would probably be much more organised, but if it wasn't for this site I'd still be on ready made food and living in clutter, I wouldn't have a daily list to work through and would be back to chasing my tail again, can't win can I.

Oh and I haven't even touched the garden for weeks, it's a mess off the winds, everything has blown all over, I have packets of seeds waiting to be planted which I must do, can't be bothered is my only excuse.

Oh my confession is good for the soul.
One day I might be more organised...........

Nah, makes no difference. It may do at first, but you will become so good at rolling them that you'll start doing that without thinking about it too..

I do smoke "cheapo" ciggies from Lidl's now. well it's still not cheap, but cheaper than the real brand I used to smoke.

I smoke loads less roll ups as I can't be bothered to make them. I probably am a snob as don't like smoking them in front of friends who smoke 'posh ciggys' so won't smoke when with friends usually. It's also much cheaper, especially if I manage to get my hands on cheap tabaco if someones been on holiday recently etc ;) I do know people who make piles of them at a time to smoke later, but I can never be bothered. Also I use the ultra slim filters so has much less in each cigarette than there is in 'posh' ones.

Oh and my sons a bigger snob than me, he's a Ben and Jerry's Icecream addict. Part of my budget each month usually gets blown on his icecream, but while I am buying it I usually can't resist one pot a month for the rest of us.

Yeah, I was feeling the window cleaner confession too..........
But I get mine to do the inside as well:o .
If you don't do them at the same time, you will end up not doing it & then it won't look like they've been cleaned at all, so I look at it as saving the £7.50 it costs for the outside which would be wasted if the inside wasn't done as well for £15 both sides (keep hoping he will give me a discount for both sides but doesn't:( )

My word, I pay £2.50 once a fornight to get the outside done, monthly sometimes in summer as don't need doing as often. I do the inside myself when cleaning each room. Is that because it's probably too untidy to let him in to do them :o or that DP is still in bed. Actually some mornings he does the windows I make sure the curtains are closed so he doesn't see any mess :o I am getting better though. I don't think they offer that service here anyway. If it cost me that much I'd probably get one of those big hoses on poles to do my own.

Earlier this evening, I was in the kitchen waiting to dish up dinner and unloading the dishwasher when my mind wandered back to some of this afternoon's posts. They concerned dishcloths and how wasteful it was to replace them if they were stained. Now, I do agree, but as I said, I like nice white dishcloths for the kitchen.

What brought this back was the sight of my lovely mugs on the shelf. I love these mugs and, like my snowy dishcloths on the washing line (drifts back to days of nappies blowing in the breeze), they make me smile when I see them. But ... I bought these mugs when they were half price even though I didn't need them. In fact, I gathered up my collection of mugs that I'd accumulated over the years and gave them to charity. I rationalised that they were half price, would last years ... But I knew I'd broken the REDUCE, recycle, reuse rule.

However, I feel these little things lift me on a dull day! Shallow maybe, but I feel that a few little pleasures like this lift us on a day to day basis. I'm not talking about big things like a Kenwood Chef or everyday purchases such as Tesco Finest, just those little things that you look at or use everyday. I remember a thread a few weeks back where someone was trying to persuade herself that she could buy a new washing up bowl and another where someone didn't like to use her lovely Lakeland clothes pegs ... because they were too lovely.

Honestly, I OS most of the time but wonder if sometimes we're a bit too hard on ourselves and should allow ourselves these guilty pleasures without all the heart-searching.

    Hi Magentasue,

I don't think any of us should feel guilty about anything we do that isn't particularly Old Style. MSE isn't about being frugal to the point having no pleasure in our lives, it's about making the most of what we do have and making our money go as far as it can.

Everyone will have different needs/wants/reasons for being Old Style and I don't think anyone has a right to judge another on what they choose to spend or do with their cash. Life's too short to adopt a lifestyle change that makes you miserable, so if I was you I'd continue to enjoy what makes you happy without feeling guilty. :)

There's an earlier thread on Old Style 'guilt' that may interest you:

What's your non OS guilty secret?

I'll add this thread to that one later to keep the replies together.

Sometimes moneysaving seems to me like a guilty "secret" pleasure. I've mentioned on another board about reactions Ive had from workmates when discussing the rising costs of grocery bills, they wanted to know how I kept my bills down, I mentioned a few things that I do, (only the simpler things like shopping at Aldi) but peoples reactions made me feel like a complete skinflint! But Ive now found that I really enjoy saving a penny or two here and there, feeling that Im getting a good buy for my money gives me a buzz. I do wonder sometimes if Im just being a bit too mean though, but I dont think I am, I do spend money on other things instead!

My other guilty pleasure is Whittards tea bags. I used Aldis own brand quite happily until I decided I liked Whittards better, now I have a bit of a moral dilemma every time I come to the end of a box!
