Although we all have the one thing in common, being OS Moneysavers, no doubt there are many reasons why we are this being this way.
I've noticed that some are doing it to be mortgage free in as short a time as possible; some are trying to get out of debt that was accumulated before their 'light bulb moment'; some are having to live on one wage instead of two due to retirement, having a baby, redundancy; some are having to manage on benefits due to bereavement, divorce, loss of job; some are making a conscious decision to change their lifestyles for personal ethics; some to be able to afford a distant goal.
Personally, I'm in the best paid job that I've ever had in my life - but having said that it's still not what would be considered 'well-paid'. I do not have debt of any kind - no mortgage - no credit cards - no catalogues. I have adult children and a growing number of grandchildren that I like to able to 'treat' now and again - not easy when your job doesn't keep pace with inflation. I have one holiday each year and that to me is 'sacrosanct'.
We go to Scotland for two weeks, every year, to stay in a caravan - not extravagant in anyway, shape or form. But neither does it come cheap! During that time we need to put our cat into a cattery - but we love him and want him to be well looked-after while we're away. I do not drive and neither does my OH. We travel by coach (approx 10 hours each way!) and get around by public transport while we are away - again not very cheap. But that holiday is my luxury in life! My escape from everyday routine; my little bit of heaven from a very noisy, scally housing estate.
But above all else, I refuse to go into debt for my holiday! I do not see the point in borrowing to go away, and then taking ages to pay back the cost!
So my OS luxury is my annual holiday - and yes I do go whoopsie/bargain hunting while on holiday! Morrisons in Fort William look out - here I come!!!0 -
Ohhh if I was to honestly list all the non-OS things I did we could be here a while!! (still new to all this so guessing its a learning curve!)
1. Persil Liquid Tabs for washing (the stupid tablets, although cheaper never seemed to disappear properly, especially in dark washes!)
2. Comfort Concentrate (Love the smell!!)
3. Uncle Bens Sweet and Sour Sauce (wouldnt have a clue where to start!)
4. Ready made pizzas (again wouldnt have a clue where to start!)
5. Go through mountains of Antibacterial spray in my kitchen (like maybe a bottle a week, bit of a germ freak!)
6. Mr Muscle bathroom cleaner (Ummmm probably a stupid question but what else can I clean it with?!)
7. Ohhhh a whole ton of kichen towel (DH appears to use it for..............well just about everything and anything!)
8. Plug In Air Fresheners (guessing these probably really arent OS!)
Ok might have shamed myself enough! lol Maybe I should quit there!!Its hard to wait around for that something you know may never happen, but its harder to give up when you know its everything you ever wanted.........
People tell me Im going the wrong way..............when its simply a way of my own!0 -

Granted from I told her we wouldnt need her anymore I havent actually done any ironing but I will!!! lolIts hard to wait around for that something you know may never happen, but its harder to give up when you know its everything you ever wanted.........

I am definately a work in progress. haha! We grow our own veg, make our own bread and homebake practically everything but here I confess my sins!:
- When a certain brand of ready meal was on special offer, I bought ten, just in case! (and funnily enough they taste of nothing and still in the freezxer)
- I use CLinique for my face and always will. (My mum does cut my hair though and I colour it myself)
- Still use fabric conditioner, but make my own iron water
- Make my own cleaners, but still buy cilit bang for the nasty jobs
Great thread, really funny xx:rotfl:0 -
I feel so much better!
I buy french butter, and when I am on my own love beans on toast with sliced processed cheese on top. I actually hide the cheese in the fridge as I lecture my OH about additives in food. Also buy Liz Earle for my face AND body, buy M&S expensive tights and worst of all use a non rechargeable battery operated toothbrush.
In my defence I only use kitchen roll to clean up when the cat is sick (very rarely and I never buy a cake or a ready meal and this year have grown herbs & lettuce. Does this cancel each other out?0 -
phew - im glad im not the only one with non-O/S ways!!
mine would be:
- expensive face & body products (i wont use anything that tests on animals, and i dont like all the cheaper stuff, so that really leaves dermalogica, urban decay and the 'naked' skin & body care range!! )
- smoking (OH says if he had a penny for everytime i tried to give up he would be a millionaire!!)
- expensive cat food and cat milk etc (for the cat, not me lol!!) - shes such a snob she wont eat the cheaper stuff - she doesnt care about O/S!!
- regular hair cuts & highlights
- new car (although i had an old banger and it kept breaking down and i had so much hassle with it, spent a fortune on the repairs, not to mention having to get up at 5.30am to get to work on the days it wasnt working - i decided it was worth the expense of a new car to have peace of mind!!)
- expensive drinks when out (like JD & coke - its almost a fiver - eek!! or cocktails) but i dont go out that often, and when im at home having a drink its usually cider (and im going to try the homemade stuff!!)
- shoes - cheap shoes hurt my feet and i end up binning them, so i look at expensive shoes as an investment for the future lol!!
im not in debt or trying to pay off a mortgage (havent got to house buying yet!!) but i love O/S as i just want to make what money i have go further, and get as much pleasure and enjoyment as i possibly can from it, as well as having to pay for the essentials!! you need some treats in life!!

I have expensive hair cuts every couple of months and use expensive face products and hair shampoo. My other guilty secret is Comfort Conditoner as I love the smell - even on my towels!0

Oh dear...
I still use conventional cleaning products, but I'm planning to try OS as they run out, that's my next challenge!
When I buy clothes I try to buy the best quality I can afford, I find cheaper clothes don't hold their shape after a while so I stop wearing them and it soon becomes a false economy. Also, I'm a busty lady so often I can only fit into Bravissimo blouses and tops! Along the same lines, I spend a lot on underwear, got to have a well fitting bra and the matching knickers are my little luxury
I love nice beauty products, friends and relatives give me nice things as gifts, but I have been known to indulge myself
I get my haircut for £25 every 2 months. I used to go for the training days and it was £10, then I found my lovely hairdresser who knows exactly what I want so I've stuck with her.
I buy frozen puff pastry. 59p a block from the cheapy freezer shop.Refusing to Sit Down & Shut Up since 19740 -
I know there is a thread on "Confessions of an OStyler" - but this is more of a "is there one thing that you can't do OS?" Go on - make me feel better
My name is Thriftmonster and I use household bleach all the time.:D (and I prefer that well known brand instead of MrT)
PS I don't need lots of posts telling me how I can use vinegar instead of bleach - more- is there anything else you use lots which you feel guilty about?“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”
