Ryanair to charge for all luggage

  • So what you are saying is that National Express and Megabus both include luggage in the ticket price. National Exress includes two items with a total limit of 40kg (no more than 20kg per bag) and Megabus one 20kg item. You can also take a small item of hand-luggage. This is similar to a full-service airline. So, how is Ryanair like a bus service?

I imagine Bob was referring to your comment that "you can take as much luggage as you wish" on a bus for no extra charge.

In my experience that has been the case. Clearly, I was wrong. However, Bob's answer actually demonstrates that Ryanair does NOT provide the airborne equivalent of a bus service.

You need to learn not to take things so literally! Of course a flight cannot be exactly the same as catching a bus, unless you are suggesting they should do away with security at airports?

No, I'm not suggesting that. However, when Ryanair's business model is criticised then the argument is often made that what Ryanair provides is a bus service therefore you should not expect anything more than you would get on a bus. My point is that Ryanair actually provides less than most bus services and that the 'flying bus service' argument is not valid.

Ryanair is entitled to charge what it likes for luggage; if you don't like it you don't have to travel Ryanair. However, it is not a 'bus service'.

Does for me, I take a small bag on the bus to the Airport and I take a small bag on the plane, I think of it exactly like a bus service. I do not want to take a large bag - ever.

But for anyone who does want to take 20kg of luggage it will be included in the price on the bus or on a full-service airline but not on a low-cost carrier. The fact that you don't want to take a large bag is not relevant.

Well if you compare it to a short haul bus service (and you'll find there are far more of them than their are NX buses), it is the same - does your local bus allow you to put luggage in the hold? :p

I think Mr O'Leary means he is offerings a basic, no frills service. It's all about getting you there as cheap as possible, not providing any pampering.

Of course, it's nothing like a bus service in regard to security, check in times, opportunities to buy scratch card etc. And, unlike buses, you are guaranteed a seat.

This terminology stands alongside internet cafes (that rarely serve food and drink) and suggesting every add on fee to an airline fare should be seen as "taxes."

But what if you want to take 25kg in one bag? NX will charge you then, will they not?

Every bus company has different rules - does that mean that some buses do not provide a bus service, just because it does not fit your criteria? :p

No but they don't have a limit on what I can take inside the bus.
