Olympics Security bailed out by army..

Apparently a well known security firm, paid handsomely to provide security for the Oympics, now can't meet the deadlines and is been bailed out by the forces according to the BBC.
Apparently they had resource scheduling issues which hampered timely training.
trust they will pay for the armed forces resources or have their funding docked .:wall:

I hope there are seriously penal default clauses in the contract and that G4S will be paying through the nose.
Its not like there is a shortage of unemployed folks at the moment, there is no excuse for this 'mishap'.0 -
If the armed forces has capacity to do this, then why weren't they doing it in the first place? Surely the incremental cost to be tax layer would be far lower if troops, whose salaries are already budgeted for, were used for his sort of thing? Plus why are we making such swingeing cuts to the military, and then using tax revenues to fund payments to G4S to do a job the forces could have done? I'm sure there is a good reason that I am missing.0

13500 armed forces staff were already being used and now an additional 3500 will be available.
The security firm is being paid £300m to provide 10000 "guards".
£30000 per guard for 14/21 days some mark up on the LNMW.
The LT bonuses don't seem so bad.;)"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

are the armed forces receiving a bonus for doing olympics work - after all it's not really in their job description (unlike some other relevant examples we can all name...).0

Don't know about the bonus but apparently they will be billeted in some pretty basic conditions, school halls, TA barrack room floors, hangars etc.
I wonder where G4S would be billeting their recruits they can't all have been local?
Apparently Milliband wants the families of troops to be given free tickets to events, thought they had all been successfully sold;-)"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Unfortunatly for them Millitary assistance to the Civil Power/Authority is in their job discription.0 -

i suppose so, but it would sit more comfortably paying a cash bonus to troops for having to do something out of line with their normal job, as opposed to paying tube drivers extra money for driving the same train up and down the same line on the basis that it will be harder work because there will be more people than usual on the train.0 -

actually, you will prob find that use of the armed forces for peacetime operations like this, should be a last resort. not as a first choice like the goverment is doing. we are not employed to stand in for whoever decides to go on strike for more money, usually when they are actually on more than us anyway!!!!
as for bonuses, no we aint getting a bonus as such for doing it, unlike the police and every other company/force that is doing it.
and yes, im posting this from a personal/experienced view as someone who is currently serving0 -
We have had 7 years to plan for this, and personally I feel that security at the Olympics should have been a job for the police and armed forces in the first place.
Given the level of security vetting required to ensure that we don't place potential terrorists and/or protestors into these positions, and that these are very short term posts in any case, it was probably always going to be unrealistic trying to recruit people for a 3 week job several months in advance to allow for vetting and training.
Genuine jobseekers would be looking for, and obtaining, other posts in the interim, so the security of the games would effectively be left to the dross."When the people fear the government there is tyranny, when the government fears the people there is liberty." - Thomas Jefferson0
