Ikkle hope you get well soon!!! How do you breastfeed and formula feed your little man without getting him refuse the breast?

He was born sucking on his fingers hun, he loves to have something in his mouth, it comforts him. So I've been very lucky in that he's had a dummy from being 1 day old as well sucking on my pinky finger tip, his own fingers/thumbs and my nipples. I think as long as you find the right teat for you then you will have less problems between confusion. When I was in hospital I was expressing and using Medela which he got on great with, when I came home I tried Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature and he seemed to have a bit of a problem with it as milk went down his chin, cheeks etc and he managed to suck the teat into itself itms. We gave formula via a Mam anti colic bottle last night and he got on much better with that than the TT, he's since latched on well numerous times to my nipples although I'm hoping to just express my milk from now on and give bottles as I've struggled with being comfy myself holding him (being ill/arthritis etc) but I didn't get on with the manual pump I was using, so I think it's just a case of trial and error and finding a teat/bottle type that means your baby still has to do some work to get milk when bottle fed xx
You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.

  • Morning all. Hope you are all good today. Just to have a final say on bank holidays. In littlemoog case, as she is on on EMP for the whole time she is off and it's written in her company mat policy, she can't be paid for BH on top of her pay as she would in fact be paid twice for them, which wouldn't be balanced. However where people are on SMP or EMP which doesn't include full pay for the whole time they are entitled to be compensated for bank holidays. This is the general rule. I don't think any one can say that another employers mat policy is wrong as as long as they give you the minimum (which we all know is not alot:rotfl:) which is first 6 weeks + 33 weeks SMP + holidays accrued, the rest can dealt within the policy and they can enforce it to the letter if they so wish.

I also think that all mat pay that is less than full pay is rubbish, just my opinion. However, so few employers offer it in this country, so it will always be a bone of contention. Mine doesn't offer it like most, but, I do get a small enhancement for an extra 6 weeks which helps, but the remaining 26 weeks will be very, very tough. But, I'm mindful that there are lots of people only on basic SMP for the whole time so I am very grateful.

Sorry, that turned into a long drivel about pay. :o

AFM think my infection has gone, thanks for all the well wishes over the weekend. It has just wiped me out a bit and am knackered. Oh well, I only have 11 days left at work :j although may worka few days the week after if they need me to as my manager still can't secure a release date for my cover 8 weeks after an offer was made

Have a good day everyone :)

Ikkle - glad you and the wee man are doing ok and that you are feeling a little better. I used EBM in a bottle for DS too so DH could do a feed at bedtime. We used the TT Closer to Nature bottle - if your DS is able to suck the teat in on itself it sounds like the valve may blocked/closed over. DS used to do that to his til we realised that the little valve in the teat wasn't fully opened. (Just a thought - you've probably checked that already!) This can just be that the plastic valve needs pinched to open it fully plus we were a bit stupid and didn't have the valve turned to face up the way so his chin was covering it slightly which also didn't help so he ended up soaked the first couple of times. What can I say - I was very tired! lol! I have the medela swing electric pump and its great. Just need to get some replacement parts before junior arrives.

Jonno - hope you're getting some rest. Sickness and pregnancy can't half wipe you out! yayy for nearly being on ML!

BM2 - cadbury fingers - hhmm - yummy. Even at 8am I could go some of those!

Well, I'm tired and my belly hurts. Think we slept funny. I know the baby was uncomfortable as it slipped down as soon as I turned over. Probably crushing the poor thing under my rib or something :(

Oh and I'm on water all day because I no longer like tea (again), coffee makes me heave and I ran out of hot chocolate yesterday ><

I'm in the same boat, office is closed from 21st until 3rd Jan (the 2nd is a holiday too in Scotland) so by my reckoning I should get 8 extra days plus the other bank holidays. ACAS and the senior partner at work (employment law solicitor) agree but another partner doesn't so I'm still fighting it. I'm waiting for a response to a meeting they are having and if I don't get the extra days I've to write a grievance letter to make it official and then when my holiday year is up I can take it to an employment tribunal. I'm hoping it won't come to this though.

Maternity leave aside, do you usually have to take these days off out of your contracted leave allowance? Or are they freebies? If the latter, then I'm not convinced that your employer needs to include these. (Not that I'm an expert of course - ACAS and an employment law solicitor will be far better judges!).

  • They are freebies, we generally don't have to use any of our AL to get them. ACAS have said because I get them every year then they form part of my contract (can't remember the term for it) also everyone else in the company get these extra days so they can't discriminate against me for being pregnant.
