moneypenny, I liked the style of Your Baby Week by Week and someone else on here said that they also liked First Time Parent (which I have out from the library but haven't read yet). I started on What to Expect: the first year but didn't really get on with it.
As for the birthing I read many pregnancy books v. early on and have forgotten! I have bought the natal hynotherapy CDs but they haven't arrived yet, everything else has kind of merged in my mind. I've been lent a book which I'm starting called Childbirth without fear - will let you know how I get on.

It's supposed to help you get into a relaxed state when giving birth. I'm not normally one to go with these visualisation type things but it seems there's something in it so I'll give it a shot. There's also apparently a medical argument to say that a woman can't give birth while she's nervous as adrenaline interferes with the hormones that need to wash around your system to make you contract and all that; so if you are calm the birth should go better for you (which sounds quite obvious really).

Moneypenny, just realised I have also read another book which was birth related (but have apparently immediately forgotten!) called your body, your baby, your birth by Jenny Smith (a midwife) - it was OK, worth a look. As with most of these things the problem can be too much information I think - it's easy to start dwelling on all the unpleasant stuff which they have to tell you.
  • Rups there has to become a point when you think "right let's prepare for this baby, plan stuff and buy stuff" for a lot of ppl this is the 20 week scan when they know all is well. I'm not saying that you don't/shouldn't stop worrying or means any fears will disappear. I was buying from very early on like 10 weeks, I didnt find out till prob 7-8 weeks lol. That wasn't a conscious decision to prepare more I found stuff at good prices/free ;) and excitement.
Its hard, but you've really got to somehow filter these idiots out of your life for now. Anyone who keeps on with negative things should be banished. I told a couple of people if they nothing nice to say to !!!!!! off until baby arrives. Because you'll have enough fears and worries of your own, well I know I did, without people telling stories. And to be honest I hear some and I think really? Is this an actual real life story or someone talking bull crap?

I've not written my birth story yet as I don't want to scare anyone on here. But I had severe pre eclampsia and it's not the norm really and nothing anyone could have done to predict or prevent it. It's not a nice story really, It ended in a crash section, but both me and bubs are fine and we both very nearly weren't.

Ikkle I listened to the cd once and fell asleep, didn't get a chance to listen again. You'll have to let me know if it's any good so I'll keep it for next time!

I still can't believe bubba is here! It's so hard calling him a name apart from bubba lol. I read on here and I think "when I give birth" I might do that etc. I still think im pregnant, so weird seeing bubs in his Moses basket, but so so amazing :)

LMM: did they need to knock you out entirely for the section or did they manage with just a spinal block or epidural top-up?
  • No it was a general anaesthetic. An epidural had been placed just before eveything went tits up but no time to use it. I remember the anaesthetist talking about it over my head :( told me to keep my eyes open then he put me to sleep :o lol

Aww LMM thanks for the advise. yes you are so right! i have learnt to just block thse comments now .lol. my MIL is lovely but like you said we cant live in fear. i am actually tired of worrying the way i did before the 20 week scan and its after that i fully kind of relaxed. with the bubble type feelings in me recently, i feel better and positive so am sticking with that. am going to be 23 weeks tomorrow! :)

LMM - I'm quite hoping the CD does send me to sleep lol. Would be awesome. I will try to use it properly though.

Have to say you've actually really helped me as one of the things I have been dreading is that if the anaesthetist says my spine is too fused for epidural etc I would need a general but seeing how well you've done and how awesome your dinky little man is it's kind of eradicated that bit of fear that if I do have to have a general it's not the end of the world kind of thing. x
