Aida our pram (Uppababy Vista) comes with a carrycot unit and we were told it should last up to 6 months as it's quite large. The seat unit is only suitable from 6 months, so not sure what we'd do if they outgrow the carrycot before then! We're planning to use it as a travel cot as well, as it's suitable for overnight sleeping. One less thing to take with us when visiting relatives.

Dizsie I don't think carrycots are considered suitable for use in cars any more (although they were used that way when I was a little one!) as baby isn't strapped in etc. DH's mum is always going on about what they had when he was born and saying that we don't need one of "those fancy new carseats" just put the carrycot from the pram on the back seat  as it's what they did 30 years ago. *rolls eyes* the world has moved on since 1982!

Littlemoog - I've also got the Uppababy Vista - and I'm planning on using the stroller as soon as possible, the american website (as I believe the pram is from America?) says that the 2012 model can be used from 3 months. I asked the shop and they just say 6 months as a caution, I think it's all to do with when the baby can support it's head, but my friend had no choice but to use the stroller from 5 months as her baby was too long for the carrycot!

Bassinet: Suitable from birth to 6 months
Toddler Seat: Suitable from 3 months to 50 lbs.

I think they say that to get you to buy the infant seat insert which makes it completely lie-flat! Carrycot is pretty generous compared to some others we looked at though so will hopefully make it to 6 months. Think it will matter more for second baby as we're planning on getting the rumble seat to convert to a tandem buggy, but I don't think you can use it with the carrycot attached.

Jane have a carrycot which is a car seat. It clicks onto their travel system. I love it, but I priced it when I was pregnant with DD and it was £1k for the lot. Too much for me.

If I had my dd in lie flat mode in her pushchair past three months she would have gone mad. I didn't have her upright but I had her up slightly. Age was very inquisitive and hated lying flat.
love you lots like jelly tots :o

Thanks Littlemoog and everyone :) It's strange that there's no real guidance out there.

Jedi - congratulations on the birth

Vic - I hope all goes well for you and glad you've got lots of support.

Savage you can get lie flat huns one but they tend to be pricier and a lot more bulkier than the normal car seat type. That Aprica one you posted is horrible lol I've visions of a car breaking suddenly and even with the head support babies head jolting to the side. A normal carry cot would be no good as it has no harness inside to strap the baby into, the ones you've posted links to do.
You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.

  • tattoo - I had to start buying trousers at around 12 weeks but that's because I was working then and I wouldn't have been able to get away with the elastic band trick.
sm - thank you for that. Unfortunately I need to formally ask for a break so I don't think I can change it. From what I've gathered, I need to give them a date of when I'll be stopping and returning. My tiredness never got any better but I'm imagining things get even worse as time passes by or does it just get uncomfortable?
LM - shame about the dress. I got a Tiffany Rose one (http://www.tiffanyrose.com/maternity/clothing/CBDP.html) and I really liked it. The fabric was thick enough and fitted nicely. I bought it 2nd hand from ebay for about £40-50 thinking I can sell it again but I've not done it yet. But you could buy it brand new and sell it afterwards so you'd only pay £50 for it...(oops I see you've already ordered the phaseeight one)
Aida - there's no such thing as a silly question. We all had to learn it somewhere. You don't need a carrycot per se. It depends on your circumstances. Will you be doing long journeys where the baby is in the car seat for 2 hrs straight? Maybe someone else can help here but I'm working if you have a long enough break after 1.5hrs for example, you may be able to put baby back for another hour? Mine is a car seat/carrycot (it's adjustable so baby can seat up or lie down) and it's 0-13kgs, up to 18mths but this will depend on the size of the baby as well. It could last me only a few months if s/he has long legs ;) ps. I wouldn't buy it second hand myself (sorry dizsie!).
Vic - thanks for the update. Will be keeping our fingers crossed for you.
Laura - many congrats! Very sorry to hear that you didn't get the birth you wanted but I'm glad you're both safe and sounAd.
dizsiebubba - mine is different to yours but it uses the seat belt to attach to the car seat. Maybe yours is the same? There are some straps to attach baby in mine... aren't there some on yours?
As for the Jane carrycot CL mentioned, that is sort of what I have http://www.debenhamsplus.com/DE_Jane_Mother_and_Baby_Car_Seats_60053252/version.asp but I bought it with the pushchair and it was ex-display so it worked out a lot cheaper.
