E.G I want a changing table because I don't want to have to bend over the floor all the time.
I know the quetion "What do you need to buy for a new baby?" comes up on the family forum all the time and the replies vary from "4 vests and babygrows and a couple of terry cloths, as baby will be breastfed, with no dummies and will be co-sleeping and I'll use an old sheet as a sling, so no buggy, and I don't believe in cars as they pollute the atmosphere, so no car seat" to "Motion sensor baby monitor, the most expensive travel system, cot, crib and two moses baskets (just in case one gets boked on, designer clothes, teddy that makes womb noises, a new car, a nursery that an interior designer decorated, blah blah blah.":rotfl:

nice list dizsie. it gives me an idea of stuff too as was supposed to sit and decide what baby needs before and after (which i dont know at all) so this is good.
my sil said we could sit and make a list of things we need and what they can get us. looking forward to that! once i have had my scan i can then get excited for my holiday.

The buying baby stuff, we bought loads with dd muslin squares, bought and never used, cotton wool, never used, just used wipes, baby toiletries, we didn't use any lotion or oil as she didn't need it. I know it's hard when it's your first it's the same with me and this is my second, something you don't need and tbh you will hardly ever use. I recommend the 2 changing mats for up and downstairs. Also you end up getting loads of little sudocream pots in bounty bags and these last ages.Mummy to Isabella - March 2008 and Daisie - September 2012:A - November 2011 (mc)0

I found my November baby used very few socks as they had babygrows on most of the time (and as they were a girl, tights the rest). I bought lots of Johnson's products and they brought DD out in a rash, so I used them myself. I never really knew what to do with baby oil and baby lotion? I bought them and never used them. Same with talc? My DD hated the Bumbo seat. She would chuck a mental when I put her in it. It was given to us from SIL, from her LO, so that wasn't a big deal.
The bad mother I am, I bought lots of cotton wool and gave up using cotton wool and water after 2 or 3 days and used pampers sensitive wipes. It was a lot of faffing about. I bought Little Swimmers and a swimming suit and never had LO in the pool until she had outgrown them.
I'm buying very little this time. For me a gym and bouncer were invaluble!0 -
Oh and I haven't bought any dummies because I'm a bit hippy like that and I don't think they are good for the child... ask a dentist or speech therapist and they will tell you so! Each to their own of course but as I never had one, neither did my mum or my gran and we didn't die of Infant SDS or Cot Death (which is an argument the dummie lovers frequent to me to make me agree with them!) so I am going to try not to eaither... although if baby won't stopr crying I might cave and rush to 24hr tesco! lol:jBaby Boy born December 20120

Socks & Babygrows.... I'm not a babygrow fan... to me they are pyjamas so he will wear them when just me & him in, but if we go out or have visitors he will wear outfits so I will need socks
Talc ... I am having a little boy so it will be to keep his balls dry basically so he doesn't get sore!
Bumbo - Not sure about it yet hence why it is on my after birth list
Swimming - We will go...I love it and I want to have a water baby so that is why I want one!
Cotton Wool - I'm going for wipes straight away too & i'm washing clothes in any powder I feel like unless he is born with a skin condition or gets an allergy from it... I will not pander!:jBaby Boy born December 20120 -

I hear you and with my LO I breastfed for nearly 8 months (until I had to go back to work), and she has never had a jar of baby food. it was all homemade. But.......
I would recommend a dummy. I'll probably get slated, but please lets not feud over this! I really wanted breast feeding to work and so many people seem to quit because baby wants to suckle constantly for comfort and they are exhausted. I felt that it was worth it for her to be breastfed and me to be sane. Many babies find it so soothing. In fact a midwife saw I had a spare dummy in hospital and asked if she could give it to another mother, who had swore she wouldn't give her baby a dummy and was breastfeeding and 24 hrs later was begging for one.
Oh, and saying that someone didn't die of cot death without a dummy is like saying a smoker didn't die of lung cancer, so it must not cause it. My uncle is a 94 year old smoker. It doesn't make it good for you! I had a dummy until I was 2 and I have very nearly perfectly straight teeth and never had a brace.
There are pros and cons for everything and for me the pros definitely outweighed the cons. Saying that it wasn't in her mouth 24 hrs a day and I agree they don't look the best.0
