I just say (pleasantly) that I won't give them money and I won't sign up to give them money.

I remember a few years ago I was shopping in Manchester. I was rushing to make my train from Piccadilly, as the only direct train was one per hour. A chugger started talking to me, asking me to stop. I said I was busy and in a rude way he said 'oh yeah looks like you're busy, you're just shopping', as he was following me, so I briefly turned round and said 'I need to catch a train', and he still followed me until I walked faster and ignored him! I just put my headphones back in and turned up the volume!

Its actually illegal for collectors to rattle a tin, and they can be reported for doing so. I collect for the Poppy Appeal once a year (my grandad is the head organiser in our area so i help out at one of his locations) and we are told strictly not to rattle tins and not to approach anyone. We are there if people want to give a donation and take a poppy, not to harrass people.

Must be different in Scotland as we are allowed to rattle the can but not to approach and ask for money. Obviously if indoors then the owner can have their own regulations. The charity I was involved in organising did give all collectors a sticker with details but many don't.

They were proper Chuggers, no tin or bucket. It was the usual 'how are you today?' nonsense.

They were in your face, standing in the middle of the exit. Of course everyone was trying to avoid them, trolleys were being bashed etc.

    Its really not on

    You're right, it's not on.
I would do as Paddyrg suggests and complain to the store manager.

Have you had a chat with the store manager - customers complaining about chuggers saying it's getting to the point when they will shop elsewhere will get their attention pretty quickly

OP - as you say they were proper chuggers, do you know what charity they were trying to get people to sign up to DDs for?
As well as complaining to the store manager I'd drop an email to the charity and tell them that their representatives are making a nuisance of themselves in Morrisons and it's not doing their fund-raising any good.
Maybe mention that there's some discussion about their particular charity and its fund-raising on the internet (no need to say where) and it's not painting them in a good light.

Sometimes it is that hard. Countless times I've been followed down the street by them after my polite "no thank you", or they follow trying to engage my children in conversation. No sooner have you shaken one of them off, the next one steps out in front of you, then you have to finish your shopping and return back down the high street to go through the same thing again. I really wish it was as simple as a polite "No thank you"

Then its they're loss if they follow you, see whats the longest you can keep 1 following you

Same here, I've collected on the street for the Samaritans. We were told not to shake or rattle the collection box..
I have done collection box holding too and the 'no shaking' rule is pretty much standard everywhere. So even if it isn't illegal, the people who have given you permission to collect at that spot will soon have a word with you if you are reported for being a nuisance.

The direct debit ones I'm usually ok with, except when it's a cute girl. Then I usually end up signing up and cancelling the DD as soon as it appears on my account.... :/

    Suppose the collector has Parkinsons....

I bet they're paying Morrissons to allow them to work in the shop.

That's even less money going to the charity.
