Chuggers in Morrisons
Comments
-
Once in Sainsburys I had an energy company trying to sell to me!
It is annoying when chuggers and sales people are allowed in the stores to hassle people.
Its actually illegal for collectors to rattle a tin, and they can be reported for doing so. I collect for the Poppy Appeal once a year (my grandad is the head organiser in our area so i help out at one of his locations) and we are told strictly not to rattle tins and not to approach anyone. We are there if people want to give a donation and take a poppy, not to harrass people.0 -
Illegal? Or just not advised?
Is there an actual law on the statute books stating 'it is legal to solicit donations via a collection tin as long as said tin is not rattled' or words to that affect?0 -
I think the best answer to anyone trying to get your money out of you is to say "NO". If you give them a reason then any salesman worth his salt will spend all day trying to overcome your difficulty.
Having said that I went to Tesco today and had a tin rattled at me. I said, "I'm sorry I don't carry cash". This idea occurred to me since I normally carry a small amount of money but only for an emergency. I pay with plastic at the till.
Today I forgot to take any cash and so I was only being truthful.
I think I will use that line more often with tin rattlers. It's not my fault your honour, they made me do it.0 -
We get told its actually illegal, as it is pushing for donations, and the collectors shaking tins can be reported (they should all be wearing a unique collectors number).0

The Collection
While regulations do not directly state that you cannot 'rattle your tin', the Metropolotan Police's guidance states that:
No collection shall be in such a manner as to cause, or be likely to cause, danger, obstruction, inconvenience or annoyance to any person. It's not my fault your honour, they made me do it.0 -
I dont live in the met area, are they all the same for all regions? Or is that met specific?0

I just found that quote after a Google search so I am no expert on tin rattling.
I had a sister who did this in Bedford once and I know she was told to stand still and not rattle the tin. That is the end of my knowledge. It's not my fault your honour, they made me do it.0 -
Lol, not just me then, i was just told the same and that we can be reported for rattling. But who knows, maybe some charities are more cautious than others.0

Same here, I've collected on the street for the Samaritans. We were told not to shake or rattle the collection box.
If someone was kind enough to give a donation, I did talk to them............to say thank you.;) Other than that, I was quiet (no shaking and rattling) and stood in one place.
I don't like chuggers and the way they 'hunt you down'.10 Dec 2007 - Led Zeppelin - I was there. :j :cool2: I wear my 50 (gold/red/white) blood donations pin badge with pride. Give blood, save a life. 0 -
I hate the way they leap out in front of you in the street. They're all like drama students prancing around and I hate their over-familiar behaviour. One the other week tried to shake my hand as I walked down the street. I remember another time I was on my phone and one jumped out in front of me and started gesturing at me to end my call!
I seriously dislike them and the thought of bumping into them in a supermarket fills me with dread. I also hate the fact that it's likely that as well as the chuggers taking a wage from their collections the supermarket is likely to be taking a cut too.
Why haven't they just been banned?0
