  • 'in my opinion' say things are missing - we need to scan the item to make it appear on your receipt so it needs to go somewhere LOL,

I've been shopping online with Tesco's for a while now and I must say I am really pleased. In the early days I often had to call/email with items missing for a refund or not being about to find the substitutions until I'd actually unpacked. Tescos given their due made this very easy and just credited my account. But recently my shopping has been spot on so thanks goes to the packers like Mrs P!

Don't expect too much when ringing the "Customer Services" in Dundee they are not very customer friendly.

I had been doing ALL my grocery shopping at Tesco (online/home delivery) for approx. 4 years, until recently when I was advised by a Tesco Customer Service representative that "Tesco home shopping clearly isn't for you sir" (This was after I explained that going in store was not an option and that the home shopping was a MUST - hence the recommendation was to shop elsewhere !)

This was due to my complaining that I had been charged over 50% more for an item than the price I purchased at. The lady went on to explain that the web price on the day (only 14 hours previous to shopping being delivered) was a guide price only. I was told that if you retrospectively find items in your shopping that are more expensive than at the time of the shop online that you can take them back to the store (some 5 miles away for me) which kind of negates the point of home shopping and the £4.99 that you pay for the benefit of it !
When I suggested checking my bill at the moment of receipt and querying/returning over priced articles to the driver I was told in no uncertain terms that the driver would not have time to wait and as such I would have to return the items to the store in my own time or accept the price increase !

(It is interesting to note that at the time of your online shop they cannot tell you whether a price is going to be going up on any given item on the day of your delivery and hence warn you of the price increase in the same way that THEY CAN AND DO warn you when a special offer will no longer be in existance on the day of your delivery !)

Needless to say I took the Customer Service Reps advice and now shop elsewhere.

I stopped ordering from Tesco's online when they sent me something that was 3 months past its sell-by date. I reported them to Trading Standards who investigated it and did an audit at the store concerned. Unfortunately they couldn't prosecute but they did tell the store to apologise to me. I never received an apology from Tesco's.

We also had a lot of problems with substitutes and damaged items, they kept putting things like ready meals or bread in the same bag with tins. I just used to fill in the form on their website and we normally got a refund as well as getting to keep the item, but a lot of the time the damaged items had to be thrown away anyway.

And then there was the time the delivery was 4 hours late because they hadn't trained the driver properly and he didn't know how to work the sat nav in the van  All the frozen things had defrosted because the freezers on their vans don't seem to work very well.

I have to order our shopping online because I have a disabled husband and we don't have access to a car. I use Sainsbury's now, I find their prices are similar to Tesco's, you get free delivery if you spend £70 (Tesco's never did free delivery at all when I shopped with them)and I get Nectar points. I find their website is easier to use than Tesco's and they have better descriptions of the products. Ingredients are often listed on the item description, which is very handy if you have a family member with allergies.

Any substituted items are sent in plain blue carrier bags so it's really easy to spot them amongst the others and give them back to the driver if you don't want anything. They also have 1 hour delivery slots and if they are late you get a £10 voucher off your next shop. And no, I don't work for Sainsbury's! They aren't aren't perfect but I have tried Asda, Sainsburys & Tesco's and Sainsbury's seem to be the best IMHO.

I'm so glad I read this, I've been using Sainsburys for a few months and wondered what the blue bags were, I completely failed to suss out they were substitutions!

I agree Sainsburys are great though. I got a £10 voucher when they were only 10 minutes late and the driver had rung me to let me know, customer services are always helpful too.
  • Try this for a substitution - ordered 3 jars of chilli (on buy 2 get one free) got three jars of honey!

Green bananas will only ripen if you keep minimum 14 degrees c with a Kiwi fruit in with them as that will give off the etheline gas required to trigger the fruit.

There is a banana colour chart on here that is used by tesco

I ordered 2 tins of Tesco Kidney Beans in chilli sauce, the sort you'd make a chilli con carne with, they were substituted with 2 tins of Heinz Mean Beans! I've had far worse than that though. This month I wanted a pack of fresh chicken breasts to make some curries, what did I get.....a pack of Birdseye chicken things in breadcrumbs!!!

They are always cocking things up for me, I've had several things missing, yes they were on the printed list but not in any of the bags. This happened again this month, the driver went through the bags with me and vouched that the item was definately missing. The worst time was when I had 10, yes 10 items missing, things like bread, sugar, milk, coffee, breccy cereal, eggs, can't remember the rest, turned out the few bags hadn't been put on the van, and even when they were delivered later that evening the cereal was still missing!!!!

Tesco home delivery for groceries is a bit kak at best, I've been using them for about 14 months simpy because of the vouchers for money off that are everywhere on the net. This month I'm going to give Sainsburys a go because Tesco and Tesco CS are useless, they say they'll let the store manager know so the service can be improved, however it's never improved.

In 12 months there has only been 2 occasions when everything was spot on yet for the other 12 times or so (I shop monthly) that mistakes were made, some small, some massive, I was never given an incentive in the form of a voucher or anything to carry on using them, so now they've finally lost my business for good, muppets!
