Afternoon all, ALIBOBSY that is just what we do with our woodstove!! it is in the lounge/ diner which is 32 x 16 and we just leave the door open to the kitchen and it stays toasty. We had the kitchen radiator taken out when we refitted the new kitchen because we never had it turned on anyway. We haven't used the central heating to heat the house at all since we had the stove installed. We just have the boiler on twice a day to heat the water tank and don't feel the lack at all. The house is perfectly warm without it. We light the stove mid afternoon and it warms up the chimney wall to the extent that you can still feel heat in the morning, its smashing!!! Cheers Lyn xxx.0

Regarding SHTF weather wise.
I am not sure how good this site is but I just put our postcode in and clicked on the UK Weather Risk (drop down box to right of screen) and it is showing -13 here on Sunday, -14 on Wednesday!!!!!
http://www.theweatheroutlook.com/
That is for North Staffs, can anyone beat that?
Sadly yes! Says my area will be -20 on Wednesday 23rd!!! Not sure I feel better for knowing that. Hopefully it will be wrong ...0 -

Just wondering Lyn if the bedrooms get some heat as well? We were thinking if we had the burner on the long wall of the big room it would be opposite the stairs doorway, so if we opened the door for say an hour before bedtime the heat would hopefully be enough just to take the chill off whilst getting into bed.
Obviously we would still have the CH for if things got really cold, but we never have that on whilst in bed anyway. In fact when its cold like this we often go to bed just after the kids and watch TV in bed, alot warmer and no heating needed to be put on at night then. We might have the CH on for say 30 mins-an hour after tea for baths etc then it stays warm enough for bedtime and once in bed thats it we are fine till morning.
Makes me want one even more lol.

I found the web-site listed earlier provides a much lower prediction for my area than about 6 others I have checked.
We expect a cold night (-8) but after that it will be wandering around -3 to +3 over the next week, rather than the -12 predicted on that site.
Have to see what actually pans out.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Blimey -14 in Staffordshire  I live in Staffs too, but am currently in Sri Lanka with work where it is around 34 - 36 degrees. I am going to have a 50 degree drop on Sunday when I get back  (assuming my plane can land - I guess it won't be that bad, will it???) I better ask OH to bring me coat to the airport!
(oh and apart from the weather, don't be too jealous of the SL thing. It is strange and difficult as a lone woman and I am largely confined to hotel with the work I have to do - which is rather BORING!. Dirt cheap though - my curry and rice for tea was around £2.50 - and that was hotel prices! When I have ventured out I have been stared at as though I have 3 heads - my colleague, who is Sri Lankan but not here, says many will not have seen a western woman before. I have also seen some extreme poverty - houses that aren't even decent enough to be called "shanty")I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -

Blimey those are awfully low temperatures everyone is quoting as forecast! I finally got my MIL to listen to me about stocking up on food and for the first time ever she admitted I was right today about the weather and that it WAS too cold for her to go out. She has thyroid problems which the doctor swears are under control, but my MIL is always cold. She has the thermostat in the house set to full and even uses it in the summer. I feel like I am suffocating with the heat when we go to visit. At least she is staying in and keeping warm, with enough food stocks to last a few days at least. I keep repeating the warnings about the weekend weather predictions and warning her she may get very heavy snowfall/extreme temperatures to deal with.
I have my fake fur trappers hat, scarves and boots on standby in case the snow /ice comes back here, which I think will happen. I think it will be around the 21st. At the moment much of Athens and the mainland is really flooded and the fire brigade (which is mostly volunteers) can't keep up with the demand to pump out flooded businesses and homes. I feel so sorry for the ones with no heating and no money to put things right if they are flooded as they probably won't have insurance either.
The first day of working at home went well. I got all my jobs done in Corfu town this morning, then worked in the afternoon. Despite the horrendous weather my internet and electric stayed stable all day. We had four hail storms, very high wind gusts and the odd thunder bolt but it was 13 degrees. The sun appeared for all of 3 minutes today bringing a huge rainbow to the stormy black sky. I got a lot of work done in the two hours allotted to work in and I have earned a heady 5 euros in bonuses on the first day.
The pay is only 150 euros a month but I get a bonus for each internet entry I do and commission from each client I help or introduce. I am looking forward to the summer months when I can see me being much busier meeting with clients and showing them the properties. Then the basic wage will go up as well as travel allowance. I will still help out at the gym one morning a week as I get both our memberships in return for doing it, which saves us 130 euros a month on the gym costs. They are not big jobs or pay much but every little bit helps at the moment.
Have a lovely log fire lit, the radio is set to radio two and I have a nice glass of local honey and cinnamon liqueur in my hand. Life is good, its amazing how many things you don't need to make you happy when things are tough. arghh, dh has just gone to lean to shed to remove all liquids, some of which were in a large sturdy wooden box with a lid. There are very small vent holes at the bottom. The tops of several bottles have been nibbled right through, esp tonic water. A large container of olive oil has also been attacked but not entered. He is cleaning it out now and will line with wire mesh but we are going to have to put traps out again as I keep many kgs of flour in that lean to, although several feet off the ground. shtf will not just be coming from mankind but from the animal world
Oh no! You have my sympathy K, amazing what the little so and so's go for... Managed to send 4 of them off with old fashioned traps, and made sure our stocks were stored in tins/bottles/jars too! Shudder....
