:D Well, my predictions up-thread came to pass. Pix of cute kids sledging, snowman building....? Check. Cute animals in snow? Check out those red squirrels. Gritting lorry off the road? Yup, one of those in a ditch on the Daily Wail website this am.

Disappointingly no performing sheep, Mrs LW, but we can't have everything in the world.

No more snow since yestereve. Haven't a clue how cold it is outside as my tiny flat has its heating on and all is well here. Propose to wear fake fur trapper hat and mega mittens and big coat and Y*xTrax on way up to the city. Some of those steep streets can easily turn into ice chutes.

Hope your late night snackery proved benefical, Siegemode, and that you and I continue to be successful in evading the Faahion Police. They have a campaign on to confiscate Big Knickers, a dear friend told me. She looked suitably-appalled, as you do.

Sturdy underwear was what made this country great, or at least a world-class international thug. You wouldn't've achieved an Empire if the nation's wimmim had been preoccupied with adjusting their thongs.

Freezing fog and ice where I live but I'm having a stab at getting the car out of our little parking area and up the track as I need to pick up a new supply of long term meds for the dog and the car needs a run and a 'defrost'! Also there is snow forecast possibly from tomorrow which will really screw up access. There are around 20 households here and most drivers are jostling for space each night parking up the top or even on the road itself. It was a lot easier till the farmer rented out some more barn conversions :(.
Did anyone see the first episode last night of that new drama series Utopia? Some of it was a bit graphic and I had to hide behind the sofa (!) but it seems to be where our society is heading.
  • -2 here this morning but no snow, just really beautiful rime frost , makes the world look like a christmas card! The lurcher is a complete loon in cold weather, he pings about outside and rolls on the lawn and scoots himself along with his back legs and his nose in the frost, he's having a lovely time!

GQ I haven't altogether given up on skiing sheep, there is always tomorrows papers, and then the day after, then the day after that etc.etc.etc...................

Stay as warm as you can all of you, the weather forecast is a little unsettling for Friday and onwards, but, thank goodness we have our preps in place, yes? We are going to make sure that we have a shovel in the porch and wellies down from the shed. We are also going to bring in extra logs for the fire and station the currently spare compost bin on a pallett outside the kitchen door and fill that with logs too to make sure they stay dry and easily accessible. I am off to town on the bus this morning to get in some perishables like bacon, cheese to save having to go out if the snow does become a problem, and if it doesn't I wont have to buy again for a couple of weeks so nothing wasted and no harm done. Take care everyone, Cheers Lyn xxx.

Minus 7 outside and we need to go to the post office.. by the time I get the layers on I'll need a lie down :D We have a horrendous forecast for friday, a high of minus2 but winds gusting at 30mph and heavy snow showers. It's ok being cold, but cold with wind is a real pain. But nice looking out on a white world with a blue sky after a whole year of dark skies & rain.

Siegemode, a good tip from the bushcrafters and other sources is to eat something really late with a lot of calories in it, like a nice bread roll slathered with butter. This gives your body some fuel to be burning on if you're trying to sleep in colder temps than normal. You also generate heat as your metabolism processes the food.

Of course, you may have digestion issues which make eating just before bedtime unwise, but just a thought, in case it might help.

I've lived in some very poor accomodation over the years, thankfully it's in the past now, so have had experience of going to sleep wearing my pjs, topped with a jogging suit and dressing gown, big socks and a wooly hat. The Style Police would've jailed me for that lot, once they'd stopped laughing.:p

The wooly hat and socks I'll recommend to you, really makes a difference to how warm you sleep.

Good to know that I can eat late and possibly help myself stay warm, so far I don't have problems with digestion. TBH if I am having "One" meal I tend to have it late in the day, not planned that way, it just happens...

I have found those Mug Shot type meals often work and hours after eating them.

Like you said I won't win prizes on style:pfor what I do to try and stay warm. It doesn't always work but I do the thermals, jumpers, hats, socks, gloves, scarves indoors. Hot Water bottles and duvets. Perhaps I should be using the electric blanket if it doesn't use much energy. It's one thing having all the gadgets to make life easy but another affording to use them.

Perhaps the next step will be to invest in a onesie...or that may be a step too far...

    Thanks for the ideas GQ.

Well, it is -4.3 here according to my phone, lots of frost on trees and ice on pavements.

I was going to buy YakTrax or whatever they are called from Asda but they had sold out so ended up getting some cheapo ones from Home Bargain, £1.99.

The are the carpy ones with studs in and I lost one on the first day of use but they did keep me upright when walking the dog.

I tried them again this morning and made sure I walked on the sheet ice to retest them, def work, worth £1.99 if you are desperate.

Glad it isn't bin day today, I couldn't get the key in the padlock on the side gate, I tried running the key under hot water and spraying WD40 in it and still couldn't open the thing. Just managed it now so I won't bother clamping it shut, I will just leave it hanging through the bar on the gate in case it happens again.

I don't know which I prefer, frost or snow. At least it gets warmer when it snows.

popped into town to top up the fresh supplies so I can hunker down and looked in the 99p store. They had Oral B toothpaste so I bought a year's supply - that stuff's normally about £3 although I did notice in Waitrose that they have brought out a new one (probably not much different) so that must be why the old stocks are being sold off.

I do like it when you find a real storecupboard bargain!
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

    Regarding SHTF weather wise.

I am not sure how good this site is but I just put our postcode in and clicked on the UK Weather Risk (drop down box to right of screen) and it is showing -13 here on Sunday, -14 on Wednesday!!!!!

That is for North Staffs, can anyone beat that?

Thank for that GQ I have now got visions of my Grammer school Knickers in my head! We were only allowed to have large grey flannelette ones. Blim*y that made me laugh!:rotfl:
Maryb:- We use Pe*rl Drops and buy them in P**ndl*nd too. Stupid price at the big SM's.

So far the weather has not been too bad in my little corner of Pennine Yorkshire. But it has certainly highlighted the difference between the givers and the takers in our small off road community.
One example is the little communal parking area - which is currently only being used by myself and a couple of neighbours with 4wd. As I don't need the car daily anyway, it seemed best to leave the limited space up by the road for those who really need it. Anyhow the parking area is sloping and my alloted spot is near the bottom so I took the precaution of putting down grit to create an ice free zone around my car to help stop anyone from sliding into it. And this is just what happened! My neighbour who is always boasting about the prowess of her Jimny (as opposed to ordinary cars) admitted that she would otherwise have crashed into my car the other day. She then took to parking in the space I had so thoughtfully cleared and still didn't think of lifting a finger to put down any more grit - despite needing her vehicle daily! Yesterday, without a trace of irony, she even commented that she was glad someone had put down some grit behind her wheels prior to her setting off that morning.
In fact the 'grit fairy' in that case was a pensioner neighbour who doesn't even use the car park.
Now I reckon that a good 2/3 of our community are like her and a 1/3 are like him. And as the wider community is probably no different, it doesn't bode well if things get bad out there. Hopefully if TS really did hit TF, people would pull together more. But I suspect there will be a world of hurt inbetween.
