Regarding SHTF weather wise.
I am not sure how good this site is but I just put our postcode in and clicked on the UK Weather Risk (drop down box to right of screen) and it is showing -13 here on Sunday, -14 on Wednesday!!!!!
http://www.theweatheroutlook.com/
That is for North Staffs, can anyone beat that?
-14 for me as well on the Sunday, according to your link, but last night it was -6 here in my little patch of the midland's.£71.93/ £180.000 -
LOL that made me laugh Pineapple......fortunately most of my neighbours fit into the old goats group...most of them are sheep/goat and olive producers.....
I GOT THE JOB!!!!! It was the same real estate company I turned down months ago for a commission only job as a freelancer. I told her at the time that I could not afford to do that and to get in touch if she ever needed someone good at their job and if she was willing to pay.The job is only for ten hours a week but its a great chance for me. I will be getting a basic wage plus commission and an extra payment for each email/enquiry I reply to. I can work online from home so that is a big bonus. I will be liasing with clients on the luxury end of the market for businesses and villas. I start the job tomorrow so a quick start. I am really pleased as even a little bit of extra cash will be very welcome.
We are yet again on a weather warning, this time force nine warm winds and dangerous thunderstorms. Great joy!
Trying to investigate a very curious message I got from Piers Corban the weather man last night......he circulated it to many of the science/weather/space sites . He has really stuck his neck out this time and forecast a major solar event between 16/18th January that will cause major weather events around the 21st and could affect world weather for the next twenty years!!!!! I will let you know if I learn any more.....scary stuff to say the least
Looking on NASA's sitetoday there is a really big sunspot with the right type of energy to put out x class flares (the biggest most disruptive type) and its directly facing us now and for a day or 2. So not so far out a prediction. What with the cold and heavy snows predicted for weekend, its time to be really glad for those preps.

Piers Corbyn is an utter awesome genius, he really is a genius in the true sense. He forecast that on 17th dec, together with the X flare. All part of the beginning of the little ice age, which means very hot as well as very cold, gales and nasty stuff. Just got to go with the flow, there is no choice really0 -
If only we had a few plant pot heaters right now. We have another shtf here now, our boiler is making strange noises when it kicks in. Rather like a car trying to start but not quite managing.
Is your boiler a condensing boiler (most modern ones will be), and is the noise almost like bits of ice rattleing around in liquid?
Other posters have mentioned before on this thread about the overflow pipe on these boilers freezing so it could be this. We had it year before last in the snowy cold period (or was it 2010 when we all had alot of snow not sure). Anyway the boiler has a pipe at the bottom which will run out through the wall and into a drain. Because the water drips slowly down this pipe it can freeze on the outside bit in very cold weather and slowly builds up a blockage. The pipe can be defrosted to fix it, but OH found it was a pain keeping clearing it everyday so he unscrewed the pipe connection to the boiler inside and we just had the water drip into a tub on the worktop underneath it. It doesn't pour out just very slow drips.

Got everything I need in advance of the predicted snow chaos on Friday. My sympathies to those with work or care responsibilities. No doubt some weather guru will say 'don't go out unless you have to' but we all know it isn't that simple.
That said and while not wishing it on anyone who has to go out (and get back), the one thing I like about a 'white out' is larking about with the dog up on the road at night - no noise, no people, no traffic - just a wonderful wintry peace.
Ironically my cottage is toastier in the winter than in the autumn. In fact I doubt I spend proportionately more on heating. That's because I can justify having the stove on 24/7 albeit just ticking over and I am not forever using firelighters and kindling to light it or starting it from cold.0 -

Last year the local gas network was here for months on end laying new pipes so fingers crossed it will be OK this year.
It's just another argument for not being reliant on one source of heat if possible.0 -
same here welsh marches they are giving feels like -20 for next week!0

Pineapple you are so right, we have the gas plus an electric heater back up, but we are saving long term for a wood burner.
The idea would be to have it in the long through room, living room/dining room that we have. The kitchen doesn't really need heating tbh the radiator in there is a waste and always turned right down, so any residual heat that flowed through from the dining room would be enough.
2T well done on the job, hope your first day went ok.
No snow here at the mo as it all melted within a day, but very cold and white frost everywhere and predictions on a number of weather sites are for heavy snow friday and saturday then very cold weather and the odd snow shower for about a week.
So will do a last minute stock up tomorrow and batten down the hatches, OH wants to get a couple of those camper type tins for cooking on the gas BBQ if things come to that so may nip to the local army and navy/camper type shop in town whilst we are there shopping. Also making sure everything is charged up and ready.
Kittie, I am just wondering with the talk of a little ice age. When you say hot as well as cold do you mean for us? I am happy to cope with colder, tougher winters if we get hotter better summers to grow my veg in lol.

That weather link posted earlier gives us a few low temps, but the worst was next week where at one point its -11 feels like -16 so blummin cold.
Somewhere earlier in the thread I think someone mentioned getting info from al jazzerri (sp?)for news. Today we were flicking through channels and noticed there is a tv channel for them and its all in english. Was quite interesting as it is from a completely different perspective than the news n the UK. Suprising what world events haven't even been mentioned on BBC/Sky.
I had no idea parts of Spain and Holland were having snow problems, and the BBC obviously didn't think 17 (non brits) being blown up by a terrorist bomb in Afganistan was news. Plenty more stuff as well.

That is for North Staffs, can anyone beat that?Provincial City won't be that cold, not by a long shot, according to that site. Move sarf, young woman.
I think today's high will be 0 and tonight's low will be somewhere below Brass Monkey. No more snow.
City centre was largely bereft of shoppers and those who were there were in wellies and boots or on their aspidista in the snow. I wore my Y8xTrax and trapper hat and tried to resist smuggery but, by golly, it was hard.
meme30, glad I made you laff, sorry about grey flannelette flsahback moment. My grammar school ordered that gals perpetrate sports in 8" deep cake -frill pleated mini skirts with special 100% polyester knickers to be worn over your regular knickers.
Very sensible, having a uniform apparently designed by and for !!!!!philes and then protecting our modesty by having special overknickers protecting our actual undies from public view. I still cannot wear navy to this day *shudders*
Went to Icel*nd and got some more bacon and eggs and a couple of FB pies just sorta came home with me (after I'd paid, of course). Well, they're longdated and you never know when you might need a FB pie.;) Oh, for what it's worth, they have litres of semi skim UHT milk much cheaper than Tosco or Sains. Most cross to have missed a trick like that.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.
