I guess it worth a try xI must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0 -

Mine is about 9 I think. The only repair it has needed was a new hard drive last year. Apparently they do have a shelf life. I don't think mine did bad seeing as it is in use every day.
A great local computer repair shop fitted a new one and transferred all my info - even my bookmarks - for under £60.This pooter's motherboard failed when it was only a few months old and I had on-site service to install a new one. I'd already had the Computer Wizard over and he'd tested the chips and they were fine. He'd backed up my hard drive onto a portable one which he'd given me for storage just in case they wanted to take my pooter off-site.
It's also been pimped by the Wiz to have 100% more RAM and a network card fitted last year. I'm hoping to keep it going until M/soft no longer support XP, whereupon I shall need another one as this one won't have enough power for the newer operating systems. Am saving up for it.
It's quite sobering to think how much we rely on our computers and how we would be left with both practical problems and social deficits if they break/ are stolen/ the power is off.
I've been thinking about it for a while, but am planning to make my own book (more likely folder) of useful info gleaned from websites, such as how to built certain kinds of stoves and lamps and make candlewick and various other things. It'll be something that I can add to and tweak and that will be usable even in a power cut. As an old fart of the pre-techie era, I never trust 100% that these fab toys will keep on working.:o
Better than a book, of course, is to have these skills so practiced and fluent that you can just do them automatically but living a bushcraft life in a city centre flat isn't realy viable; it'd set my smoke detector off for starters.:rotfl:
Bitter outside but no more snow but seems to be Friday=snow day so we'll have to see. Can only hunker down sometimes.
ETA; Oh blessed relief. The across country round trip of 60 miles which my parents were making to get Nan to a hospital appt tomorrow is now cancelled; Nan is going to stand it down because of the weather. It would have been very bad to get stranded with such an elderly lady in the car. It's a weight off my mind.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Delurking.
I think a baby bottle warmer isn't designed to reach very high temps. You would probably want your soup hot rather than warm. The in-car kettles are supposed to be good, though.Bossymoo

Mind? I'm flattered. This site is about sharing, IMO, and I get a lot from it.
It occured to me that the time you'd most need the info is likely to be during a power outage and a fat lot of good a really useful bunch of websites on your bookmarks would be right then! I shal lahve categories on cooking, lighting, water, shelter building and a first aid section and prolly lots of other things.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I actually bought my computer from the computer shop I mentioned earlier (Halifax West Yorks). I got it when the laptop finally bit the dust - it was so old and knackered it wasn't worth repair but they managed to transfer the data to the new computer.
I try to save sensitive files on a USB but goodness knows what they make of my bookmarks! Plus I use Firefox and passwords for everything are stored in password manager and I'm assuming repair peeps can access them. I guess the only way round this is to not to store sensitive passwords on the computer
The computers are mostly built by this shop so an amalgamation of different branded components rather than an off the shelf make. I believe the motherboard is ASUS. I sometimes wish I had got a laptop due to space restrictions but the darn thing won't die
I would buy from them again in a heartbeat because it's like dealing with a family firm as opposed to some anonymous chain with spotty youths on commission. :rotfl:0
