:) My motherboard's an Asus. defunct high street. Dad's pooter was built by a small shop in his market town and that's Asus as well.

I should add that I use his from time to time and see the start up screen, not any kind of techy nerd.

I have some useful books in the home inc Richard Mabey's Food for Free which is the foraging classic and was also thinking of having a go at fruit leathers as per wotisface's book (Ray Mears, sorry brain foggy moment).

I like Al Jazeera and I keep an eye on Russia Today - I hate Sky News because they cover half a doz items of news and that's all - plus they totally ignore Scotland and when you're trying to get the weather it's bloody annoying.

Hmm - according to all the weather sites, we are under a dotted line! That probably explains why the sky is so grey... There are little flakes falling every now & then but they're not amounting to anything. The garden felt very odd when I let the chickens out this morning; the air felt quite warm but patches of lawn & flowerbed were still deep-frozen & crunchy. The pond was clear of ice but the birds' water was solid; both are in the open, away from any sheltering trees. So - don't know whether the weather is coming or going just now!
Off to pick up the car from a very-expensive MOT - they've had it for 3 days, this isn't going to be good - and then, sadly, to a friend's funeral.

  • Morning all, ALIBOBSY the main bedroom here is over the lounge and the chimney from the lounge runs up through one corner of it. It is always toasty warm in there and the rest of the house is not very cold either. I think not running the central heating is something you get used to and the downside is that if we do go into a home that is centrally heated we are massively over heated!!! I don't think we run too much colder than most as both our girls can cope when they come to visit without being frozen too!!!

TINA MALTEASER have you thought of buying a stainless steel double walled flask instead of a heater of some kind for the car. They are very reasonable in places like T K M*x or Wilkos and are virtually unbreakable. DD1 got a half litre one with a silicone outside cover for when she went skiing in Norway for £4,99p and I found a 1.2 litre one to use for thermos cooking for £7.99 it takes away all the worry about dropping it and breaking the glass inner, and they are just as thermally efficient as the thermos ones with the glass inside. Hope that helps, Cheers Lyn xxx.

  • Woohoo we have SNOW!!!!!!! Not a lot it has to be admitted but the lurcher had flakes on his back when he came back from the morning walk and the odd white flutter is happening outside. Am I alone in feeling like a 5 year old when this happens?

Just more on the stove issue. Visually I actually prefer an open fire but practically, the stove wins. Even if it dies down/out during the night there is still enough gentle heat from the stove and stone mantlepiece the next day to dry laundry. And there is space on top for a small pan - I've cooked all sorts on there.
Plus it is nice to come downstairs in the morning to a warm room.
Gas CH is only used when I want a long soak in the bath!

Thank's for the head's up Kittie, told OH I'm going to get his med's today rather than wait till tommorrow when I'm at the doc's, and if you don't mind GQ I'll borrow your idea of a emergency folder.

My dh is out now at the docs, getting his meds plus his skin erupted from being in the sun for 2 hours two days ago. His face is so sensitive to the sun but he didn`t think to put sun block on as it is winter. I think it is the stream from the coronal hole, which also gave me a headache this morning and I never get headaches (touch wood)

Our village is getting well prepared re shtf first aid. Its a very tiny village and over 2 dozen people have enrolled for first aid courses, they have had to hold each 2 evening session twice. Really good going and we are also getting a defib, I am very pleased about that. We are not that accessible for big emergencies here

Al jazeera is very interesting imo, much better than boring sky news and bbc, both go around in a well paid circle

I brought all the fruit, hanging in string bags in the lean to, inside now and into my `spare` fridge. Two cabbages down from the allotment and hanging in string bags in the lean to and also in green bags, so they will keep for a couple of weeks. Dh with instructions to get a bit of salad stuff if possible but am not too bothered as alfalfa takes 3 days.

I defrosted 2 pork steaks and am using one today for two of us. Bashed and coated in flour/egg/breadcrumbs it goes much further and is so nice. It was a favourite meal as a child
