Hi.thanks for the support yesterday regarding our lack of heating. It felt so cold when we got up this morning and sure enough our little furry purry princess spent the night snuggled under the duvet with us and consequently I didn't sleep too well. I do worry about her getting cold as she is old, but no chance of that sleeping with us. The engineer arrived just before lunch today and turned the boiler on and had a look but it worked perfectly and no strange noise. Couldn't believe it. So he left and we waited for the temp to rise and with all rads on full it has struggled all day and risen approx 1 degree per hr. We have dg and more than the max of loft insulation and it's only just reached 22 degrees. I'm so relieved its working though as it was -13 last night in some places.
Today tshtf in another way. The laptop won't start up it keeps crashing and I have spent last day trying to/determined to sort the problem out but neither me or oh can get it working. Thank god we have the PlayBook which I'm on now. We haven't run a full back up since god knows when and I have no idea where the disks are from the original restore set when we got it almost 5 yrs ago. I also relied on Norton for storing passwords and so am without 99% of those. There's a few lessons to be learnt here I know, but right now I feel sick. It will have to the experts and that will cost but more of a concern is the private info and all our bookmarks and interested that are on there.
Because we felt we deserved a treat after all the carp this week we ordered a delivery from a local Chinese. First time we've used them and it was only the menu coming through the letter box earlier that gave us the idea. Well it was awful and ended up in the bin so that was £20 we couldn't really afford wasted.
Too many things going wrong and right now my coping head is no where to be found. Feel like a mess and just want to hide under a duvet. I know I rely on the laptop for news and research especially, you could say i'm addicted. I feel so lost. This tablet is great but not the same.
Thanks for listening and being there. Hope you all stay warm and safe. Off to catch up now, sg0 -

((((((((siegemode)))))))))) there are some days which just need to be rubbed out and forgotten asap.
You're bound to feel gutted; you've been cold and worried and haven't had enough sleep plus IT woes and a rubbish takeaway deal.
Can you make yourself a HWB and a cocoa and hit the sack; everything seems more managable in the mornings, I find.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

They were different products in my post; the 29p Basics ones (from Tosco) had disappeared entirely from my store for weeks, to be replaced by Tosco own branded ones, the next price point up, which were slightly less than double the price. Then the halves not the slices dropped to 22p for a coupla days (I had 10 tins but honestly feel not so nice as the Basics ones) and now they're back up to 50-something pence a tin.
Honestly, these days you need to have eyes in the back of your head, a calculator in each fist and a sense of opportunism which would shame a vulture.
I finally got around to buying a USB drive today which is the tiniest little thing imaginable, could probably attach it to an earring but won't. Will do a little digi-housekeeping and back up my files and then entomb it in a wee tin with foam padding and seal with tape and add to the BOB.
My pooter is 10+ years old and although pal the Computer Wisard said the motherboard and other bits look in good nick for it's age when he had the tower open last year, it won't last forever.:(Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

A great local computer repair shop fitted a new one and transferred all my info - even my bookmarks - for under £60.0 -
That weather link posted earlier gives us a few low temps, but the worst was next week where at one point its -11 feels like -16 so blummin cold.
Somewhere earlier in the thread I think someone mentioned getting info from al jazzerri (sp?)for news. Today we were flicking through channels and noticed there is a tv channel for them and its all in english. Was quite interesting as it is from a completely different perspective than the news n the UK. Suprising what world events haven't even been mentioned on BBC/Sky.
I had no idea parts of Spain and Holland were having snow problems, and the BBC obviously didn't think 17 (non brits) being blown up by a terrorist bomb in Afganistan was news. Plenty more stuff as well.

Isn't. It amazing how in the dark people are if they rely on the BBC. Our parents won't believe what we tell them if the BBC haven't reported on it. RT and Al Jezeera and even the euro news channels are more informative.((((((((siegemode)))))))))) there are some days which just need to be rubbed out and forgotten asap.

Thanks, spent a few hrs watching The Winds of War. Dvd arrived yesterday and although it was first shown 30 yrs ago I'm really enjoying it and so is oh. Feeling a bit better now but so lost without the laptop. Quite unsettling as to how much I rely on it but stuck at home as a carer it really is a lifeline that is taken for granted. Is this link any help re the weather? look down the page,

Oh finds this sites really good. I check the weather outlook site and also spaceweather.com daily.
To those that have commented about the boiler issue our pipe was kept inside and fears into the waste because I didn't pipes on the back wall. Wasn't thinking of weather and temps at the time but it turned out to be a good decision.
On the subject of prepping. Whilst many have stashes of bottled water have you considered how you will cope when this is depleted?
Or you are forced to travel lite. We have been following the louisiana sinkhole story and it raises many issues including fracking which could contaminate many water supplies. Not a great deal in the general media but the true costs to humanity long term are shocking.
Another informative nest sites is Enenews and worth a look.
Sorry don't know how to post links on the BBC playbook.0 -
For those struggling on certain benefits a cold weather payment has been triggered this week. Worth checking your postcode. Hth0

Mine is about 9 I think. The only repair it has needed was a new hard drive last year. Apparently they do have a shelf life. I don't think mine did bad seeing as it is in use every day.
A great local computer repair shop fitted a new one and transferred all my info - even my bookmarks - for under £60.
I was quoted £135 to replace the hard drive. I will make a few calls. I feel really uneasy about a stranger having access to our laptop though with all our passwords and personal info and docs. But perhaps in my stressed out state I'm being paranoid0
