So, basically the minute there is some actual S that wanders too close to the F - half the preppers in here walk off in a huff? LOL magic, good start!
We all need to get over ourselves and as Polly says, talk dehydrators with MrsL !
Talking of dehydrators I saw a big round one at a car boot on Sunday for just £2! I already have one and couldn't think of who to buy it for, but someone got a prepping bargain.Solar Suntellite 250 x16 4kW Afore 3600TL dual 2KW E 2KW W no shade, DN15 March 14

I have no idea what's going on here. Maybe because I'm a bit of a luddite, I don't understand when and why a thread is too long. Surely having everything in one place makes it easier to search?
Is the new thread intended to be different - aside from having a new title - and in what way?
Or is it simply the old thread reborne? (though I don't understand why)

Pineapple, I made a comment back at about post 39963 that we had reached 1000 pages on this thread - though I gather that's because I have my settings to show more posts per page than most people and everyone else was on about page 2000.
That prompted a few posts where people expressed surprise that we hadn't been asked to set up a new thread because it used to be the rule that you couldn't have a thread over 10,000 posts and we had nearly 40,000.
I made a suggestion that after the referendum would be a good time to do it, partly because I thought we might get some new visitors to the thread if people were worried and I know some people are a bit daunted by joining a really long thread
That's all there was to it. I was away just after the referendum so didn't get round to it but then someone else commented today that the thread was really long so I thought it was as good a time as any. I didn't envisage it would be any different from this threadIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
Maryb if you pm Zippychick and ask her to lock the old thread then that should make it clear that there is a new tougher thread. That's what's always happened before.Life is too short to waste a minute of it complaining about bad luck. Find joy in the simple things, show your love for those around you and be grateful for all that you have.0

Thanks Princess - have done
I've edited the first post on the new thread to include a link to this thread because there is so much useful information. But I'm struggling with getting the links within Vanoonoo's first post to copy over as links instead of just text, so I'm hoping Zippychick or someone can help me outIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
I've lurked on this thread for years now, and learned plenty from it. I don't participate very often, although I've always been pleased to see the way regular posters rallied round with their various different specialties to help anyone who had a SHTF situation. Recent events have been very polarizing, but I don't think anyone can deny the relationship between prepping and politics. That said, no matter which way you voted there is likely to be some sort of upheaval in the coming days and weeks. Whether you view this as a necessary step for changing the direction of the nation state, or a betrayal from fellow voters, I would hope that in the spirit of the thread you'd feel welcome to post about your own situation and learn from the insight of those present.
While I respect that there were many regulars who were pleased with the outcome of the referendum, I expect that all of them can empathize with those for whom changes in the exchange rate, potential inflation in food prices, uncertainty in the pension and housing market and even differences in immigration status may indeed be a real SHTF situation for them personally. Potentially there is some miscommunication where reassurance that life will go on is being taken as a callous assertion that the trials of individuals who feel disadvantaged by the result are not experiencing real difficulties. Likewise, I expect that for those whom this presents new and unexpected difficulties they can understand that for many this is a long awaited outcome and my represent real excitement about possibilities for alternative futures.
I don't think we can or should attempt to bridge these gaps--we all have different needs, interests and beliefs. However, that does not mean we cannot continue to exchange valuable information about how to deal with what each of us feels might be a situation that requires preparation.
I, for one, welcome the new thread knowing this one will be archived for future reference and new members might find a shorter thread less intimidating.
p.s. for those wondering, I prefer not to discuss my political beliefs on MSE forums. It has also been made clear by one specific (relatively well-respected and regularly posting) voice on this forum that my view, as a representative of a very specific group of people, is not welcome. I don't choose to take that personally, but I would hope posters would think carefully before dismissing the voices of particular groups.0 -
When a new thread is started simply because the old thread got too long, the new thread is usually the same name ie XXX Part 2.
Of course the old thread has acquired a bit of a pigs ear of a name, so I would have thought changing the name then keeping the name for the new thread and marking it Part 2 might have been better for continuity.
Personally I think 'prepping for a brave new world' might be seen as just dealing with post referendum issues. Nor do we know at this stage whether it will actually turn out to be a new world and brave has too many connotations. The old thread is about general preparedness - ie it could be a local water shortage, cash machines not working, civil unrest, food shortages, power cuts and personal disasters. As well as things like Brexit of course.
My own preference for a heading would therefore be something like Preparedness and Resilience or even Personal Preparedness and Resilience. Which encompass it all.0 -
Thank you Fairy Princess for such a wise and balanced post and hopefully you will be a regular going forward not just lurking! It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

Pineapple there's a discussion going on on the new thread about the name. It would be great if you could put this point over there and hopefully some sort of consensus will emerge. I am perfectly happy for the thread to be called whatever people like and I take your point about part 2 although the old tough threads started by Kittie always had new names which people had fun dreaming upIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0
