Oh well....and after waiting all those years to have a proper garden (rather than what's euphemistically called a courtyard garden and having to have everything in containers)...must get my googling fingers back onto current theme of "Growing food in greenhouses"....if sodden soil is starting to look uncomfortably like the New Normal.0 -

or grow rice?
Why not try researching plants for wet climates instead? I live on old watercress beds with streams on two sides and plenty or my neighbours grow food successfully. You can improve the soil drainage (lots of info out there on the net, or talk to some of your neighbours who are keen gardeners). Raised beds are also an option.0 -
Hello, interesting debate..
My twopennorth, for what it's worth (2p, I suppose), is that whilst we don't know the true cause of climate change, climate change is happening. And, maybe more pertinently for the doubters, resources are running out. At the very least, whatever the impact of mankind on the climate, we are using up the resources and so, just maybe, we should consider that.
I read recently that generations to come will ask why we didn't do anything, much like we say about slavery or boys up chimneys or whatever.....I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
Morning all.
Even if you don't give credence to human-caused climate change, what about the consequences of human-caused pollution, here and now, for you and your fellow human beings?
The city where I live has its centre under constant air-quality monitoring. Pollution from traffic is reckoned to burden lungs in the city centre equivalent to smoking ten a day. As a life-long non-smoker (and someone without a car) I am getting the dis-benefits of other people's choices. Tens of thousands of people die prematurely each year as a consquence of pollution generated by traffic.
Are a lot of these journeys necessary?

I have been reducing the FB pie-mountain a touch, due to having a few coming up to BB date at the same time, but am now ready to start gently re-stocking. Will be looking at levels of a few more things, also.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

It's a good thing to read, doubt and research yourself but I do think that people who oppose ideas because they don't trust or are cynics by default are just as 'weak' for want of a better word, than those who bury their heads in the sand.
We are all just individuals and can only be accountable for our actions but individuals that come together can change anything. If we work to lessen our effect of living on our planet and climate change happens anyway...
at the very least we would have spent our time using carefully to ensure longevity of resources for the next to come along.
Just because there's doubt over whether human activity causes changes to the climate surely doesn't just give 'us' carte blanche to continue to use and abuse in this wholly selfish way? What if eh?0 -

Agree, having recently come back from Singapore with pollution-caused bronchitis, I can vouch for this. Pollution caused by the burning of the palm oil fields in Indonesia. What's palm oil used in? Pretty much everything processed.....I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -

I was rather planning on raised beds anyway - but even they will get sodden if this is going to keep happening - and am now looking into covers for them. I've already done a lot of work (translation = spent a shedload of money) on drainage to turn this West Wales clay soil into "my normal" and it's a lot better than when I bought the house.
Current googling is now centring round covering those raised beds or doing everything greenhouse-style or the like. Many years of knowing "How My Garden will be" has meant some very firm plans in mind anyway based on "Gardens I was used to seeing (permaculture/organic version of)". So I'm not going to do a total sea change in my plans. Hence the "How can I amend My Planned Garden?" to adapt.0 -
Whatever the causes and reasons behind it Climate Change is here NOW!!! We can wrangle the why forever but what we each have to do in practical terms is absolutely everything we can to limit its effects on our lives and be as adaptable and open to the changes needing to be made as we can. It's no use bemoaning the weather events that are changing lives, that's understandable but fruitless. What IS needed is for each one of us that comprise the human race to do EVERY SINGLE thing that it's possible to do to slow down the changes that living as a human may have caused to the planetary systems. We won't live long enough to see the results, a human lifespan is a microdot in terms of time but our descendants (if we have them) might just survive in a 'life friendly' place if we do. If we don't????? possibly this planet will shake itself like a wet dog and the 'fleas' that are humanity will be gone.
Please do all you possibly can though to not let any humans be sent out into the unsuspecting universe to wreck anyone elses planet though, surely wrecking one is enough in the great plan of things? We're like goldfinches who mess their own nests, until we can fix this poor Earth of ours leaving like rats from a sinking ship should not be an option!0 -

VJs I even found it in my store bought lemon curd. :cool:0 -
I found it when I was researching paranormal and conspiracy theories in one of my first jobs in the early 90s. There were lots of theories around that it was true, and accounted for some of the mass disappearances and those of prominent scientists. I threw out my notes years ago, and probably got rid of the books (and games!) that I worked on too. It was an interesting, if unusual, job!
And I thought I'd had some peculiar jobs.Agree, having recently come back from Singapore with pollution-caused bronchitis, I can vouch for this. Pollution caused by the burning of the palm oil fields in Indonesia. What's palm oil used in? Pretty much everything processed.....
If you needed a sign that you're getting out at the right time ...
