We had a mouse get into my stash earlier this year and it was WAR!! Set a trap and caught the little blighter within an hour. Came back up from the cellar and told DH. Him: "why do I have to deal with it?" Me: " Don't be silly" So he did - he put it on the fire in the log burner!! I let him clear out the ashes next dayIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

The S may be hitting my fan
Got a referral to neurology, no idea how long it will take for initial appointment never mind finding out what's going on. In the meantime Dr "discourages" driving and heavy machinery. Guess what my job involves?
And if I am signed off sick I'll only get SSP due to an injury and time off earlier in the year. And SSP + LHA does not add up to my rent/bills. Never mind the fact I've just bought a new (ha! S-reg!) vehicle...where do I stand with driving/not driving it? If I can't drive it I'm trapped away from family with a lot of money rusting away, and if I can't drive it then my stocking up plans go down the pan and my rabbity plans hang in the balance.0 -

I'm too darned big (nearly 6 foot and not exactly spindly) so can't pull the frail woman act, but I would if I could.
.....
GQ size and height has nothing to do with it, it's all in the graceful tilting of the head and batting of the eyelids :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:BBB! :rotfl::rotfl: am having mental images of the big worm things in "Tremors" barrelling through your loft to get your stash!
ARGHHHHH I found some of the Tremors creatures today but not in my food stash, alas among my jumpers and woolens! Fancy cashmere high-neck and lovely green merino jumper got gawping holes in front! BUGG&R, at least if the holes were somewhere else a few mending stitches would not be quite so visible, but they are now.
So, bunged them all up, holey and non holey and taken them to the dry cleaners. £3.50 apiece! Luckily the young Turkish guy was open to negotiation so I managed to do a deal, £30 for 11 jumpers, with the promise of bringing more custom in the future. Then, back home, ordered a few breathable jumper storage bags from a cashmere company, but called them first and got a 25% off discount as a first time customer. Even with all the deals, the blasted beasts cost me £60 today! At least it is better than having to buy all my jumpers again! And just yesterday I was telling DH that I feel lucky that all my winter wardrobe is in good order, little did I know! The drawer where I keep these jumpers is also full with bits and pieces of cedarwood, fat lot of good it did it.
Helen2k8, I hope you get your referral quickly and they find what's wrong and resolve it successfully. Meanwhile you know that you can cope as you sound like a very organised person! Best wishes xFinally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
Evening all.
Hope everyone's keeping well...?
Having a down day today.... No reason really other then my depression taking hold strongly!
Well i think ive finally nearing the end of my prep with the list getting smaller by the day. I guess its easier for us - Having one of us at home all day, Although, This makes the bank balance struggle by the day. I had a job interview today (Spare of the moment. Walk in, heard interview's are taking place and lucky me managed to get seen..)
Don't hold much hope though, I have to say, I've never seen so many awaiting for interviews in my life. Infact, By 10am, They was turning people away and i heard the manager say they might have to remove the poster from the shop window as they couldn't cope with more CV's...
So, Without flooding the post my prep is finally down to the following:
*Food shop (Saturday) Has anyone else, Brought the turkey yet?
*Wait for my deliveries for my bedding.
* Buy more store vouchers.
That's my main bulk of stuff. Other bits are just small and i can pick up whilst christmas shopping.
Thanks for all the warm welcomes / Links / Advice other the past few days. xFuture goals:
Become debt free.
Beat Depression.
Be happy & healthy0 -
Poop Helen, thats a tough one. TBH unless he had told me under no circumstances drive I think I would have to keep going to work. Would probably try to get lifts as and when I could and have OH drive as much as poss, but don't think I could avoid it altogether (at the moment I am a SAHM-but when I was working thats what I would do).
Those of you on here with other halves who are a bit dismissive or only just on board, what do I do with mine who has taken things and run with it. TBH he has read far too many of the prepper sites and bought the SAS handbook lol. He now wants one of those SAS outdoor suvival minimum kit tin thingies He keeps picking bits up when he is out-went for milk and spotted some cheap, plasters, bandages, tweezers etc, these will help go in the medical kit he says.
My idea of prepping is having a good stock cupboard and making emergency plans, OH seems to picture living like native americans in the nearby woods lol.

Like wot you do, Mar?
I'm too darned big (nearly 6 foot and not exactly spindly) so can't pull the frail woman act, but I would if I could.
Today, amongst many other things too tedious to mention, I have been repacking the clothing part of my BOB into sturdy zip loc type plastic bags from the army surplus store. I also have a plastic liner in my backpack and a raincover in the lid of the pack. Backpacks can never be 100% waterproof as they have too much through-stitching.
I think it was Shirley Conran's Superwoman book where she observed that crises are invariably wet and cold.
ETA BBB the old country boys used to tie binder-twine around their trousers to stop vermin rushing up there. You can never have too much binder twine/ string/ twisty-ties or even paracord.
FIL had a mouse run up his trousers once and MIL, DH et all still think it is hysterical after 45 years.Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

We use the sonic repellers to keep things out of the loft here...we get something called fruit rats ..actually a kind of dormouse..that delight in getting through tiny spaces to set up home in the loft. They eat through most things but you can't miss them as they make so much noise during the night running up and down and scratching and chewing. I had my doubts that the sonic repellers would work but they do for us!
The only thing we have not found them effective against is the odd house fly that gets in, but that is okay as we need to be rid of scorpions and snakes which are far more dangerous. Yes, we do have them here in Greece. I got stung by a scorpion between the fingers when I reached into the shoe box and it hurt like hell. We have huge grass snakes that are harmless (well that is what they say, I don't want to be bitten by something six feet long and as thick as my arm....) and small horned vipers which are poisonous. They live in trees and in the small crevices in garden walls.
I only store old books and Christmas decorations up the loft, which is boarded out. I store all the food downstairs , mostly in glass containers in cupboards if they are not already tinned.
I usually put my herbs and garlic in the blender with some oil then give it a quick whizz till its chopped. Then I freeze it in ice cube trays and store it in sealed plastic containers or double zip locked bags. If I don't want it with oil I freeze it with lemon juice or wine for adding to cooking. It works great and is so cheap to do.“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin.” Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC):A0 -
tis the RAT season. Dh found RAT droppings in his stored winter boot bag, it was on the topmost shelf in the garage, about 8 feet high. Farmer friend was telling me that rats don`t wee as such, they dribble, all the time and that is why it is so easy to catch weil`s disease. My 3 traps with pipes are now primed and in place, two in garage storage areas and one safely outside the house where we saw a RAT last year.
edit: I just turned tv on and it is all about super mutated rats on the news. Arghhhh0 -
Helen I can only hope things come out better than feared. We all need some good news...as good as we are plodding on and trying to deal with what goes along.
We'll all have years that are bad but 2012 has been particularly difficult for so many.:(
Mice I saw one in the garden many years ago but so far nothing else. My food store is in what was the dining room and mainly in plastic crates and anything would have to get past three doors and the windows are all closed. So I hope that will stop the blighters.
The rest is in the fridge/freezer and the kitchen cupboards and pantry.
Princess I do hope the depression leaves as quickly as it came, sometimes there doesn't have to be a reason. I think I am doing ok myself and yet I am thinking of going to see my Dr on Friday(he's on holiday the following week)I have to phone on the day. I don't think he'll think I am depressed enough to be put on a course AD's and he'll probablt think I am doing ok but it does no harm to chat things over."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson
