tis the RAT season. Dh found RAT droppings in his stored winter boot bag, it was on the topmost shelf in the garage, about 8 feet high. Farmer friend was telling me that rats don`t wee as such, they dribble, all the time and that is why it is so easy to catch weil`s disease. My 3 traps with pipes are now primed and in place, two in garage storage areas and one safely outside the house where we saw a RAT last year.
edit: I just turned tv on and it is all about super mutated rats on the news. Arghhhh0 -

The S may be hitting my fan
Got a referral to neurology, no idea how long it will take for initial appointment never mind finding out what's going on. In the meantime Dr "discourages" driving and heavy machinery. Guess what my job involves?
And if I am signed off sick I'll only get SSP due to an injury and time off earlier in the year. And SSP + LHA does not add up to my rent/bills. Never mind the fact I've just bought a new (ha! S-reg!) vehicle...where do I stand with driving/not driving it? If I can't drive it I'm trapped away from family with a lot of money rusting away, and if I can't drive it then my stocking up plans go down the pan and my rabbity plans hang in the balance.
My hubby works for a courier company, self employed.
A few years ago he was advised against driving whilst waiting for tests and that he would have a wait up to 2 months for them  no sick pay when you're self employed.
He asked directly 'are you telling me that it's not safe for me to drive and I mustn't?' No was the answer.
So he continued driving and the tests came back as all clear so would have been 2 months of financial s**t for nothing.
Could you ask directly the same as hubby did? then you will know if you could be a danger to yourself or others.0 -

At my GP surgery I see a different person every time, I have never yet got a straight yes/no from them (the injury I referenced earlier, it was down to my employer / H&S dept to decide if I was "acceptable" in their eyes).
If I knew I'd get a referral in say two weeks then I could probably make do with taking holiday...
Ooo, BBC2 now, Great British Food revival - bunnies and berries apparently0 -

Rats and mice don't have bladders, so they wee constantly.Horrible thought, you don't know where they have been.
Eeww... I did check though, and there weren't any, er, extra currants or dribbles. Or chewed packets.
Am hoping that OH is just having nightmares....
Hope everyone double checks their stores, as someone else has said, this is the time rodents want to seek out a nice warm place to live/eat.
Lesson one learned - don't leave stored goods in cardboard or poly bags/plastic.

We had those sonic jobs, but they didn't seem to mind them.
Years ago, we got a mouse in the bedroom. We had two kittens at the time, so brought them upstairs to sleep in the bedroom with us. 2.00 a.m., DH and I were moving furniture and doing the wall of death round the bedroom. Two kittens were snuggled up fast asleep on the bed and never even opened an eye.
If you are keeping everything in either glass or metal, what are you using? I can't think of anything big enough. I freeze flour for a day or two before putting it away, but it wouldn't fit in a jar and I can't see me having several hundred jam jars lined up with flour or similar type stuff in.
Edit - just found the "meals with mice" thread
Edit 2 - there is a "more exciting meals with mice" thread:D0 -

Hello J
I used old glass storage jars which I wasn't using for anything else, those with the air-tight plastic seals. The tins are old sweet tins like Qualittee St and R*ses, also Lickrish Allsoz. Fortunately just starting a store cupboard so don't have huge amounts - yet!
Need to find good larger storage that's chew proof before I get any more stuff for storecupboard...
Just had a minor brainwave - haven't seen anything about money saving vermin control of the furry kind? Does anyone know of one?
Thanks in advance...

Does no-one have cats to deal with their vermin problems btw? My long haired cat is a lazy git and undoubtably on my OHs side when it comes to vermin control but the other two would love the chance at a rat or mouse, especially Mad Kitten.
We do have the HUGE problem of the feline verminwho run riot but are very good at fly and spider destruction. Strangely enough no mice or rats here. Mind you I only have the house to store in so not as easy for them to get access too my stash.
Not sure (having grown up in a very quiet little village) I would ever store food anywhere other than the house. Far too easy for items to get damper than indoors. The only external food storage I've ever used is a freezer in a shed.
WWI they used putties (braid wrapped up legs) to keep the vermin out of trouser legs.Put the kettle on.0 -
Hi folks
I hope you don't mind a newbie posting on hereI've been reading this thread for a while now and I'm loving all the advice. I have a bit to sort out finance wise (probably for another thread) but I'd like to start building up stocks just in case. For some reason my local supermarkets have deals on toilet rolls this week so I've stocked up. I'm pleased to say I now have 45 rolls! MrA has 32 rolls of a popular brand for £10, I thought that was quite good. I know it's an unusual item to start my store cupboard with but I figured I had to start somewhere
I'm definitely looking at my pantry/shopping in a whole new way now. Thanks to all who post on here for sharing your knowledge and advice
