What a wild day it is here windy and heavy rain.
Well the OH is still tidying and cleaning the loft up and we have found so many things we had forgot we had.
He has made some space so the T rolls and P Towels will go up there out of the road. I need to get more water stored before winter really settles in.
I have done a complete inventory of a stored food, then have made up a menu from the food we have.I have found a few things we are short on so they are on the list to get when we do the shopping next.
I am really pleased to know that we would be okay for quite a few months if anything happened and we couldnt A.get to the shops. B. no money for what ever reason C. We live at the top of a hill and two winters ago couldnt get down it as it was so slippery even cars couldnt go up or down as the were sliding all over the place.
We now have two ways of cooking if we lose power.
We have plenty of food which we will keep adding to
We have quilts and fleeces to keep warm also warm clothes
Also plenty of books, puzzles and games.
So at the moment we feel very blessed even thought to some of our family we dont have much in the way of nice things and possessions.C.R.A.P. R.O.O.L.Z. Member. 21 Norn Iron deputy h

For really early spuds grow a good First Early variety like Swift or Rocket in trugs undercover. You can start them in Feburary in the shed, you'll be covering up the shaws as fast as they appear so being in the dark doesn't matter. Once you get to mid March move them into the greenhouse and float a fleece cover over them at night and "earth" up with straw rather than compost, also stand the trugs on polystyrene to insulate them from the ground. Feed them regularly once a week with a tomato type feed or liquid manure or seaweed and you should be getting decent crops by mid April.Val.0

I'm debating which potatoes to grow next year,I grew Arran victory, homeguard and anya last year and as it was a poor year didn't have a great yield from the AV's or homeguard but would like to try them again as the ones that did grow were lovely..
This year I grew mainly Anya with a few Maris peer and charlottes, the Anya were a magnificent crop as always but disappointed again by the maris peer and charlottes..
I fancy trying either winston or red duke of york next year anyone have any opinions as to which is better??Nov forecast is in and I`ll be sowing my aquadulce seeds 3/4 through november. Garlic onion sets and shallots are in, garlic needs a whole month of below freezing weather and it`ll get a bit of that first half of nov
Re: garlic and sub zero temps, although it is said that they need that, there has been many a year here in London where I've had just a few nights of that, especially back in the 90's and they still grow fine. I stick mine in end oct/nov.
And can I order some non freezing/wet/windy days please nov 9th-12th, it's my 50th birthday and I'm going to centreparcs suffolk. Cycling in cold wet windy weather is not fun. I blame my parents; inconsiderate timing :rotfl: I should have been born in a warm sunny month0 -

It's generally recommended you don't preserve garlic this way because of the risk of botulism. If you Google for this there are pages of warnings against it.Val.0 -

Oooh, just remembered what happened earlier today and wondered if anyone else on here is signed up for the Environment Agency's Flood Alerts and if it happened to them?
Got one call on my landline and a duplicate 10 mins later on my mobile, automated msg saying this is NOT a flood alert but urging you to log onto your Flood Alert account to check your contact details are all up-to-date.
I've never had this before and I've been on this system for 3 years. I'd actually checked my account earlier this year and updated my email as I changed ISP in Feb so know I'm good to go.
ETA Noo, I have no telly and have no idea who that geezer is or what his stylee might be like. Pls assist!
KL says it in a jokey "irish accent" type of way. When he had Ronan keating on the quiz he set out to get ronan to say "potato" as many times as possible.

KITTIE and SUNSHINE - well done you both seem to be ahead of the preparedness game this year, great feeling that all is safely gathered in and you are ready for the vagaries of the british winter and summer too!!! Great to hear, hats off to you both, Cheers Lyn xxx.0
