Guys, I have snow roughly six months of the year. In residential areas we drive on at least a 10cm icepack.

So, canned goods are my friends. When it hits the -30 and lower fortnight we get every January, I just don't want to go out unless I have to.

We have the panic shops before Christmas, I mean comeon, nobody is going to starvve just because Safe way closes for 24 hours.

Now, if there is a sale on WonderCollie's kibble I'm all over it!

Glad to know I'm not the only Nokia lover!

gosh this is going to be a difficult one with no cultural points of reference! eeeep! the character keith lemon is a crass 80's throw back who hosts a pseudo quiz show where the competitors are current Z listers (not zombies, just lower ranking celebs). He mercilessly ridicules everyone and everything, usually with crazy sexual references such as "I'll smash yer back doors in". if anyone irish is on the show he constantly asks questions which can be answered with the word "potato" said in a fake high pitched irish accent something along the lines of POTAAYYTO. or he jsut randomly shouts out the word POTAAYTO. it's ridiculous. but it makes my husband laugh, and as his (husband;s) nick name is victor meldrew (do I need to explain him too?), I have to take the amused version of the husband when I can get it! plus keith lemon had a bulldog called gary who recently went to rainbow bridge and he now has a bulldog puppy called spud (see what he did there) and we have a bulldog so we like to watch and see if spud is making an appearance on the show or not.

LMAO! I'm soooo glad I don't have a TV, sounds like the kind of thing I'd rather have a root canal filling than watch, but each (and their OH) to their pleasures.

    TY for taking the time.:)

;) Peace. I have the attention span of a gnat; am surfing, drinking tea and reading Orwell's 1984 whilst avoiding the washing up.

Gawd knows when I'd find the time to watch TV even if I had one!

Guys, I have snow roughly six months of the year.

I can just cope with 48 hours worth here before I've had enough of it. In a previous life I was born somewhere hot and tropical :D

Are Vit D supplements taken regularly by everyone there?

Annie123 thank you for the link to the seed potato place. I notice they also have reasonably priced garlic too :)
I'd love to grow more of our own crops but all we have is a back yard (all concrete and just a few sweet spots of light and sunshine) I inherited a greenhouse earlier this year and have grown cucumbers (in Scotland, this year!!!) chillis and failed superbly with peppers. Can't do tomatoes.... there's something in the leaves that makes me feel odd and flakey and allergy-ish, (I can eat the fruit though... very strange... not sure if it's normal and I should persist or if it's something I should avoid!)
I'm trying to learn more about vertical gardening, container gardening and gardening over concrete but it's a work in progress :) If anyone can make any recommendations re books.......? :)

I'm away from home for a couple of weeks, so haven't been posting much, just reading (apologies) but was itching to join in with the discussion on cookery books a few pages ago..... I really like the slightly twee (I admit) books of the '30's/40's... Orchids, on your budget... Cooking in 10 minutes Edouard de Pomiane, Aunty Kate's Modern housewife's guide, that type of thing. I just love the way it's all expressed, a lot of it in terms of putting a good face on a meagre salary! I also have quite a collection of 1930's and 40's women's magazines, which are eye-openers in themselves.

Prep wise.... I think our two older children... I say children, they're 24 and 19, may well be eating their way through my prep mountain while we're away!

ETA I remember "It's a potaaaayyyytooooo" too. Now it's going round in my head.... ta Noo....:D xxxx

I've never seen a really bad snowfall here, but I do watch the supermarket delivery lorries shoe-horning themselves around the ancient tiny streets in the city centre (with the driver's mate walking point) every day. The tolerances are so tight with these ancient buildings that you huddle in doorways and think respectful thoughts of their prowess- and hope that they don't hit you. Not hard to envisage how much more difficult it would be with ice or show on the ground as they try to squeeze artics between listed buildings with jettied upper stories.

I very much doubt that the little city centre stores could handle more than a day or so with no fresh deliveries and the superstores on the periphery serve rural as well as urban customers and probably wouldn't last much longer. Better hope we don't see a re-run of '47 or '63.

You aren't near Cambridge perchance are you? and how do I go about getting a proper "title" for this thread :D
