There is the worlds biggest Mr T and a smaller one within 500 yards of the house but the sheer volume of people buying STUFF when the faintest smattering of snow appears, honestly there was no bread, milk, eggs within seconds , literally people were at the check out with trolley loads of stuff. The amount that was thosn away in the following weeks meant the pavements were groaning under the weight of spoilers food. Disgraceful behaviour!
Clearly being a few miles from the motorway means no more deliveries for MrT in the snow. Now we have a huge hub locally being built for them so I doubt people will change, just panic buy even more!

Where did all the really good government advice come from during WWII? I am amazed by the canniness of things I learn about in that time, much of it seemed to be from official advice.

To read that our leader, during a time that showed just how good a nation at coping we are/were, was greedy, selfish and 'not in it together' makes me quite cross. Conservative wasn't he?

The guy who instigated the good practices in food was Lord Woolton, he actually joined the Conservative Party but was in the first place an industrialist, here is more info about the guy. He seemed to be a good sort (for a politician)!

:( Yeah, disgraceful is the word, all right. Buying silly-quantities of perishable foodstuffs because it's snowing/ due to show is foolish and wasteful.

Better to have reasonable quantities of perishables and say a couple of kilos of breadflour and some dried yeast so that you can throw a loaf together if necessary.

My ambition in such a situation would be NOT to have to go to the store at all, unless I absolutely had to. It'd be hell getting to one of the big supermarkets (30 mins' bike away minimum) and it would be beyond-maddening to go all that way and not find what I needed. Plus with ME, journeys of that length which involve several hills would see my day's energy allocation wiped.

I'd turn out for friend and neighbour SuperGran as she's nearly 70 and I wouldn't want her on icy pavements if I could go in her stead, but she's a very clued-up lady and would probably be fine. When she was laid-up with a broken leg last year I ran her a few errands but she has a stock-cupboard and wasn't in a crisis.

Running a storecupboard makes me more aware of the quantities of various items I use, not less, so I'm able to calculate my consumption more accurately and avoid waste. Eg; 4 pints milk in 7 days, 1 litre of oil and 160 teabags a month, 1 kg of porridge oats a month.........

 We get through in a week! Hubby says I have tea not blood in my veins. Maybe that prevent me from getting zombie virus;)

That's very true GQ, I discovered by monitoring our store cupboard that one jar of coffee lasts a year and I use more cornflour than I thought.

Here we have snow every winter, sometimes deep and lasting - two years ago we had four and half feet and it lay unmelted for 5 weeks. People just cope, what else can you do lol. The only worry is the snow gates - if you go out and get caught the wrong side of them, then you can't get home. Hasn't ever happened to me yet but when I worked it was always a worry :)

I keep trying to monitor consumption but it never works as sometimes I have large numbers of visitors (DD and DS's friends) sometimes none, then DD and DS cook and use more than I would have, in the end I have given up trying to police it all. This is also why I had to stop the Grocery Challenge, it was driving me round the bend. In my household it is literally TOO MANY CHEFS!

I know I could ban everybody from the kitchen but then I would be making a rod for my own back. We all have different timetables and habits and to be honest I like it sometimes when I am tired if other family members take responsibility to make dinner. Even if they use more oil/cheese/washing up liquid than I would.

I make it up by being extra frugal when I cook, always using all leftovers to the last morsel. Also, this week I have upped the kids' rent, was £20 each per week for at least two years and now I am asking for £30. I explained that it was not only because it was an unrealistic sum (they both have small jobs) but also because they have both been irresponsible with electricity and it is a form of penalising them for having left all their electrical bits and pieces on standby. What they do not know and will only know when they leave home is that I save this money away for the time they will really need it, when they set up on their own.

:) Oooh, just remembered what happened earlier today and wondered if anyone else on here is signed up for the Environment Agency's Flood Alerts and if it happened to them?

Got one call on my landline and a duplicate 10 mins later on my mobile, automated msg saying this is NOT a flood alert but urging you to log onto your Flood Alert account to check your contact details are all up-to-date.

I've never had this before and I've been on this system for 3 years. I'd actually checked my account earlier this year and updated my email as I changed ISP in Feb so know I'm good to go.

ETA Noo, I have no telly and have no idea who that geezer is or what his stylee might be like. Pls assist!
